But Black Bears are indigenous to Mississippi, bud. check out where Teddy Roosevelt allegedly refused to kill the baby bear, eventually garnering him his nickname.

He's right; Holt Collier (the one who tied the bear up for Teddy) quit counting how many Black Bears he'd killed when he got to 1000.

I can only speak for LSU, but our state has a long history with tiger logos and monikers...

Ole Miss is still The Flood to me
Posted on 6/11/15 at 5:35 pm to TheDude321
Isn't that already their name?
Posted on 6/11/15 at 6:10 pm to TheDude321
The official name is still the Rebels.
That stupid bear is just the on field mascot.
I mean, lots of teams have diff on field mascots than their official name.
However Col. Reb was way cooler of course.

You must not know much about LSU or Vanderbilt. You should feel bad.

If Ole Miss got rid of "Ole Miss", and "rebels", in exchange for the "Mississippi Black Bears", I am either going to kill myself, or just go to Grad school at any other SEC school, and become a fan of them. frick a black bear and the rigged arse voting that happened here. We (the students) voted, but apparently no-ones votes were counted, except the three dumb-arse PR peoples, who went with "black Bear".

Who cares. We were the Rebels long before Colonel Reb. OP is just trolling.

You can't have a nickname like "Rebals" and have a non-indigenous animal as your mascot. THAT'S NOT HOW ANY OF THIS WORKS.

determining your career and future based on a mascot and sports team's name.

Determining my career, NO. Determining where I go to to grad school, possibly. If I go to Grad school it won't be for some time in the future. I might do it at a school without good sports at all, but if Ole Miss called them selves the Mississippi Black Bears, I'd seriously consider going to a good sports school for Grad school. I wouldn't support that at all, and it'd take away to much of my pride of being an Ole Miss Rebel. I doubt that they'll ever take away "Ole Miss" though, so Im not really too worried about it.

Unless it's for accounting you should always go to a different university than where you went to undergrad.

Whoa, that's a pretty big step to take over a simple name change. If Ole Miss went back to the old 1920s-era mascot of "Flood," would you object to that too? Honestly, it seems like Flood could be politically incorrect to some as well, since it might be offensive to Hurricane Katrina storm surge victims.
