Did not read all 5 pages, but here are my thoughts.......Houston Nutt is the Dale Brown of football. He is at his best with less talented teams which he motivates up....does not know how to take a talented team to next level.

While Nutt was at Arkansas, I quickly learned to lower my expectations every year, no matter how "great" the outlook.

I've learned that, but life has taught me that, not some football coach...

Nutt may share the "motivates up" ability with Dale Brown (sometimes), but you are demeaning Dale Brown to suggest that they are alike in any other way. Whether you liked him as a coach or thought he was awful, Brown is a good-hearted gentleman of upstanding character -- Nutt is not.

he inherited Snead (which, after year 2 under Nutt folded).

I am sorry but you can't put Snead's failure on Nutt. I know some inside info on Snead and Nutt didn't have anything to do with that mental midget shitting the bed in 09. Nutt also didn't have anything to do with him tearing it up in 08, that was thanks to Mike Oher, Mike Wallace, Shay Hodge and Dex.

I understand you Arky fans' thing about qb killa bc yall never really had a good qb at Arky besides Jones, and he was an improv guy anyway.

However, Snead did himself in. Dude was one of those players who wanted the fame but didn't wanna put in the work. That and he had the mental toughness of an M&M.

My perception of Nutt, is that he is almost Dale Brown like. Seems like he is more of a motivator thatn anything else. Give him a team loaded with talent and he will not make it to .500. Give him a team of less than diserables and he will make it to the Cotton Bowl.

And he wins one big game a year on emotion.

I was only using the comparison on coaching ability not character traits. the op asked about coaching ability.

I did not really mean literally, or at Ole Miss for that matter. But I can see putting in the Cotton Bowl reference where it seems that way. Did not mean less desirables as it was taken.

What I meant, and I am no Nutt expert, but my perception of him is that he does better in an underdog roll. Does that make more sense?

I should have used a better comparison. Did not mean that team had less desireables.

My assessment:

Nutt is a "rah-rah" coach. In order to get his teams to perform well, he needs something to motivate them. He will attempt to pull from anywhere for that.

While at Arkansas, he did not recruit very well. He got lazy. He would not recruit depth at all positions. A LOT of his recruits would never see campus. That bothered me more than anything else that he did. There were times that 40% of our class would not make it through there first 2 years. You cannot build depth that way.

His teams have never lost less than four games in a season. He is good enough to get you to a Cotton Bowl a time or two, but that is about his ceiling.

A top 20 class in the SEC is like the equivalent of a top 40 or 50 class in the Big Ten.

Good point. But I still think we may not win consistently against those 3 teams, but compete in win 1 or 2 every couple of years and 3 on a great year when everything goes right.

And if your fanbase is satisfied with those results, then Nutt is your man.

Musatin says he's a DORK. Vandy thinks he's a conference cupcake, and Jack Crowe kicked his butt with Jacksonville State. Last but not least he coach's at Ole Miss. He will never do any better than the Cotton Bowl.

I will say this though. He excels in comedy

I will use "satisfied" as a very loose term. I'm satisfied with that at the moment because we really need to build some sort of consistency.

We need to be a team that can win around 8 games a year for a while and hope that last year was just an aberration.

My point is......Yes, I'll be satisfied with winning 2-3 games out of LSU, Bama, Arky, and Auburn every year and winning around 8 games a year.

.....for now.

Bottom Line: OM athletics, football in particular, will be held back as long as Pete Boone and The GOB network are running things in the UMAA.

I say this because for a small school on a small budget (relative to the rest of the SEC) to take that step to the "next level" or "tier" it takes having leadership with vision, energy, and a set of brass ones.

Unfortunately, PB has none of the previously mentioned characteristics, has held back this program for 2 decades now, and will continue to do so until enough of the big $$ folks get him out.

Think about what could have been had we had an AD who got along with Tubby? Tubby wanted to do big things here and knew he could. But he finally threw his hands up and said frick it bc he was sick and tired of working with Pete.
