He gave Saban fits at LSU too, but overall, nope, he is not as good a coach as Saban or Miles.

I can only remember two games where Nutt actually outcoached Miles [and no I don't mean a victory where Nutt out-talented Miles], and that was the 07 victory over LSU and the 09 win. I'd take Miles over Nutt any day.

Whether you want to believe it or not, Nutt has either won 3 of the last four against Miles and the one he lost was close. He did this with less talent. If hes not out coaching miles then how the frick is he doing so well against him with less talent?

He is a good coach...for Ole Miss

Simple. It's one of the games he gets his team up for emotionally [LSU and Arkansas being the main ones]. For the most part, Nutt has performed well against talented teams because his teams get hyped to play. Look at how bad he's performed against MSU since Mullen has been there. It's a rivalry game for you all, yet they can't really match the talent level at Arkansas and LSU, but for some reason, you guys don't perform well against them.

Miles is the winningest coach in LSU history by percentage (not counting coaches who didn't coach more than 2 seasons in the 1890s). He is behind only Neyland, Bryant (at Alabama), Spurrier (at Fla.) and Meyer in winning percentages of SEC coaches (again excluding coaches who had no more than one or two years in the 19th century). He has a higher winning percentage than any coach ever at either Arkansas or Ole Miss (again excluding 19 century one season coaches). His teams have finished in the top 10 for four of the last six years, top 20 for five of the last six years. He has a national championship and an SEC championship. His record against coaches who have won national championships: Meyer, 3-3; Saban, 2-2; Spurrier, 2-0; Tressel, 1-0; Stoops, 2-2; Coker, 1-0; Paterno, 0-1.
You certainly can disagree that he isn't as good a coach as Nutt, but you will have a hard time backing it up. Based on the respective record of accomplishments (and all the intangibles too), I would take Miles over Nutt easily. You can't compile Miles' record of success unless you can coach. Having talented teams is obviously important (and that is part of the coach's role to recruit that talent), but there are lots of coaches with talented teams who don't have the success that Miles has had.
Here is the question: Would Nutt have had as much success at LSU as Miles has had at LSU? I think the answer is "no."

Positives:
Seems loyal to his current teams
Seems like a fun guy to be around
Good motivator
Negatives:
He's not respected by opposition's coaches or fans.
Does not demonstrate the capabilities to recruit at a high level
Average X's & O's
Overall a B- or a C+ coach IMO

Does "more with less." Mediocre recruiter and playcaller. Good motivator.

Nutt is an enigma..He wins when he shouldn't,loses when he shouldn't,recruits well when he shouldn't,and recruits badly when he shouldn't. I just hope he stays where he is.

this is true for any team. Compare LSU's play against Tenn to Bama. Obviously your team is going to be more hyped to play a high caliber team. I dont disagree that anyone would take Miles over Nutt, hell I guess I would too. But this argument wasnt started by Nutt is a better coach than Miles. It was started when I said the best OM fans can hope for is 3-2 in the west because we have enough talent to beat arky and state every other year and nutt can out coach Miles every other year. Now being out coached is different from everyones perspective. If Nutt has his team fired up more than the other coach and thats why they win, then technically he was out coached. For whatever reason, when LSU lines up with far superior talent, OM still has a fighting chance and that comes down to the coaches on either side.

quote:I don't disagree with any of this. The talent level of the coaches in this league is pretty nasty. I think that's a lot of the reason Nutt catches so much shite. He can obviously both coach and recruit. While these 2 assets make a coach a slam dunk almost anywhere in the country, they don't always amount to wins in the SEC West.

No flame word on Nutt is he is weak in recruiting. His routine as the Reverend doesn't much match with his "relationship" with that reporter back in Arkansas. Some folks think he'd sell his soul for a star QB, but so would alot of others. Fact is, don't know many folks who think of him at all.

Agree'd with Saban but that's because IMO, he's the best coach in CFB.
But for Miles...it's a slight edge to the Nutter and that's saying alot because I like Miles.
