whatever
I've set foot on "the Yard" a number of times. Again, it is what it is. You're going to find whatever you want to find, regardless of the intent. If it floats your boat to be offended and see oppression at every turn, then that is what you will find.
Where is your self-rightous indignation of the homophobic personification of the Aggies and their jizz-jars?

Get over yourselves, it's football and trash talk. We love to pick on the gay milkmen of A&M, the toothless hillbillies of Kentucky, the white-trash meth heads from Mizzou, the inbred Gumps, the goofy cowbell-ringing hicks in beautiful Starkville, etc.
There was far more stupidity than trash talk.

quote:Don't think I read anything of the sort, here in this thread. Someone from UGA asked what Southern was, and it was correctly identified as a historically black university from the SWAC. Things deteriorated from there.
And since when does Georgia need to trash talk an FCS school? And to use racist trash talk to boot?
Surprised, honestly, that an UGA fan wouldn't have more knowledge of them; the Jags beating Georgia Tech remains one of the biggest March Madness underdog stories.
to Avery and Kevin Florent on that

Yeah, yeah, yeah, and I'm sure you have black friends too.
You're a simple minded moron just repeating the same garbage your parents spewed out to you to justify your bigoted ignorance.
In all honesty, I'm hoping yall can put up a score or two early, and make UGA work some.

Really? Pretty sure that was the team; I might have been mistaken. What I remember was that they were a balls-to-the-wall pressing team (with Avery at point, and Florent as a 6'4" dunking fiend), that took Ga Tech out in a 14-3 matchup. Buddy of mine played for them in the mid-80's, was a bit of a surprise since he wasn't even a fulltime starter in high school (but plenty of hops for his height).
Remember the "slight" the next season, when they lost in the SWAC finals, and didn't make the big dance (people around here thought they'd have enough cred to slip in then), and then they got massacred by Marist in the NIT. No answer for the 7 ft whatever Dunking Dutchman.
Back to football talk, it is a shame yall couldn't continue the success Pete Richardson had. I wished yall would have petitioned to get into the FCS back then (as in, go to the playoffs). I really thought a couple of those seasons, they could have made some runs.
As for me being a joke, oh dear... you've wounded me
Lighten up. You'll give yourself a stroke with this much serious anger. I, like most people, am here to talk football and sports, and could care less for other topics.

They go to Jackson, Atlanta, and Houston all the time. They aren't going to Athens to see their team lose by 70 like most non-Georgia FCS fanbases.
Well my statement was half serious half joking, but when y'all give examples like Houston, jackson, Lafayette, etc y'all really aren't proving me wrong.
So I'll amend my statement. There won't be a large contingency of southern fans if they have to drive more than 4 hours. Especially if it's an OOC game.

SWAC baby. If you don't know what the SWAC is, you either aren't from the deep south, and/or less than 25 years old. Southern is like a poor mans Jackson State.

Atlanta is more than 4 hours dumbass. There won't be a large contingent because they're going to lose by 70.
You think they'll be a large contingent of Eastern Michigan fans at LSU in a couple weeks?

The beautiful downtown lakes were built-that's right they were all man made-near LSU by Huey Long as a way to prevent an HBCU "separate but equal," from being built across the street from LSU. IIRC FSU and FAMU have a setup like that.
This is completely false. The lakes area was originally swampland, so SU couldn't have built there even if they wanted to. The swamps were scoped out a bit during the Great Depression to give some unemployed people work.
quote:
Instead, Kingfish had the Bluffs land donated for Southern.
Again false. SU's current campus was built in 1915, 13 years before Huey was even elected governor. It would make no sense to completely rebuild the campus only 13 years later.

Like all closet bigots you're an expert in everyone else affairs and know it all
No, not an expert in everyone's affairs, just a sports fan. Might surprise you to learn this, but some people don't give a rat's arse about race, politics, or religious squabbles, and simply like to enjoy life. Having multiple teams in a local area that generally compete at different levels gives a sports fan the chance to follow a number of teams. It's actually not hard to root for Southern while at the same time be an LSU fan, and if you're honest about everything, it's also not hard to acknowledge the pros and cons of either (both) schools.
No, Southern is not a prestigious institution (unless you are being extremely narrow-minded and bigoted yourself). Yes, it's in what is probably the most depressed area of BR. No, it's not at the same level as LSU.
No, LSU is not at the same level academically as, say, Vandy, Stanford, or a lot of other univiersities. Yes, there are plenty of rough areas around LSU, too. Yes, a lot of BR is a shithole in comparison to many other parts of the country.
Doesn't mean either place is an exercise in futility, because they both provide avenues of success to those who choose to take them. But denouncing any real and valid criticism of their shortcomings is delusional, and does no good. Louisiana's like, last, in the nation in a lot of things, and if you take offense at people saying things like that, you will never improve them.
I've made no racial criticism of Southern. It's got lower academic admission standards than LSU (truth), a lower graduation rate (truth), a lot less doctoral programs (truth), a lower tuition, a lower enrollment, and less money coming in. If stating this somehow offends you, then I'm sorry, but you have thin skin.
Now, again, good luck and I hope you make the road trip to Athens. Try to enjoy your time, and try not to see persecution every time someone comments on your program- it's most likely going to be because you're the sacrificial lamb in this game, not because of any cultural issue.

quote:Ok, I reviewed the entire thread, and yes, there were definitely some thinly veiled 'ghetto thug' comments that were a bit much. To be fair, I clicked onto the last page (wasn't gonna read the entire thread).
So what you're saying is you actually believe what you said to be fact, even thought you have no basis for it?
I caught one or 2 in the page I read, and it seemed snarky rather than hateful. Offensive? Like I said- we're calling A&M a bunch of gay milkmen with jizz jars.
Not to insult you, but you've got to try to distinguish between "racist" (hating those of another race) and "prejudiced" (pre-judging an unknown, often based on your limited experience).
I'd be willing to bet that a lot of people have a very limited knowledge of Southern, and are using what they know (HBCU, deep south, urban community, lively band) to make stereotypes. you know, form an opinion. Some are crude, yes. But then when you come out guns-a'blazing with the "racist" and "bigot" shite right out of the gate, you know- you don't help matters any. Instead, try to promote your school in a good way, one that can be universally understood and appreciated. That can do a lot more benefit.
And yes, I do believe the following: if, instead of coming in angry and indignant, you come in relaxed, confident in your own identity, and playfully poke fun at your opponent in some manner (even though y'all are gonna get skull-fricked), it'll make a better impression. At the least, you'll gain 13 new fanbases for awhile, some of whom will stick.

the area it's in is predominantly black the same as LSU.
Late to this. While I have no problem with SU and wish them well, this last statement is ludicrous.
The LSU campus is surrounded by water...lakes to the east, river to the west. To the south are homes $500K+. Across the lakes the homes are in the million dollar range.
Outside of the north gates of LSU lies the Northgate Shopping area and tons of high-end condos and apartments.
To the north of that lies the historically black area you're referring to. And it's nearly gone, will certainly be gone in 10 years, if not five.
That area has the hottest properties for gentrification and redevelopment in the Baton Rouge area. Go look if you don't believe me.
While I have not kept up with the neighborhood around SU, I believe it's under gone only modest redevelopment by comparison.
The area surrounding the LSU campus will be one of the nicest and priciest in the country.
That said, good luck to Southern now, and in the future.

Big difference between trash talk and just plain ol' racist comments.
Everyone just calm the frick down. Lets just hope both teams come out this game injury free, and UGA doesnt give us the Savannah State-OK Lite treatment
btw to the guy who said SU is a poor man's JSU, eat a dick

Isn't Southern's law school pretty shitty?
Posted on 9/21/15 at 4:51 pm to RD Dawg
Great band...and in fact historically they have had a fine law school. Southern also produced one of baseball's greats in hall of fame, Lou Brock. In 2003 they were Football National Champions in their division.
