Total yards is a good measure by which to judge a defense, same as total yards are a good measure for an offense.
For example, if you go by total yards per game, Army had the #4 defense in FBS last year, with only 291.5, just 30 yards per game behind #1 Bama - but opposing offenses ran a whopping 239 fewer plays vs Army than they did the Tide, because Army's deliberate wishbone attack ate a lot of clock and limited opponent's possessions.
But when Army's opponents got the chance to run plays against the Knights' defense, they averaged over a yard more per snap (5.09) than Bama's opponents (3.99). As a result, in yards per play, the Tide was still #1, but USMA fell to #25 - ironically, just behind #24 Auburn under Steele, who gave up 5.07 yards per play in 2016.
