This is to debunk the many posts stating that winning TOP is critical for winning games. Seen many teams that won TOP and got their arse handed back to them.
Win the turnover ratio and consistently score TD's in the red zone and you will win a lot of games.
TOP Is not a major factor.
Since 2009 for NFL teams the rsquared for correlation between wins per season and time of possession per drive is 0.325 which is a shite correlation.

Thank GOD teams start reporting next week. At least the shite threads will start consisting of pics of players with no shirts on, moving tvs into dorms rooms, etc.

Teams with shitty defenses always say this.

It's still pretty important. Especially if you don't have a ton of depth on defense.

Of course, watch enough football and you'll see a bunch of things.
Conversely, I can show you many, many teams who owned the game TOP by 10+ minutes and won in a blowout.

Certainly the Time of Possession can be meaningless, but many times it does have a distinct value.
Turnover margin may be more relevant. Might be something for some person with a numbers love to research.
This might be something the government might give a multi-million dollar grant for research.
Oh, and Bert is still fat.

No. It's not even close to the most overrated statistic in football.

Thanks for the suggestion. Texas A&M just got a big boost in research money.
I have yet to see a single piece of numerical data to disprove what I posted.
I may apply for a research grant.

Oh okay. So it was all Chavis' fault in the Auburn 41-7 game. Glad you've come around.

You could say the same thing in regards to yardage, however statistics show a greater probability of wining if you win these stats.

and points scored is the most overrated statistic in football!

Auburn? The game LSU punted in 8 times?
Posted on 7/28/15 at 12:31 pm to rmnldr
You will lose 99% of your SEC games if you only score 7 points. Doesn't matter if Smart, Muschamp, Chavis, or Steele is the DC.
Remember my post said you need to score also.

It use to be important when it was Power Offense vs Power Offense. Today it doesn't mean much. The game has changed but the myths about what is important statistically are still around.
