Time of Possession is just a stat. So not, it in itself is not important.

But what is important is being able to control the clock when it's needed. And that ability will often show up in the TOP stat. Which is why people pay attention to it.

I love a good old fashioned Paul Johnson Death March. We ranked 4th overall in TOP last year. The secret is having a defense that can get stops. TOP + Defensive Stops = Victory.

LSU 40 v Oregon 27
LSU 33:04 Oregon 26:56
halftime score was LSU 16 Oregon 13

LSU 47 v WVU 21
LSU 33:22 WVU 26:38
Score w/ 1:00 to go in 3rd quarter 27-21

LSU 34 v Texas A&M 10
LSU 40:19 Texas A&M 19:41
21-10 at halftime

LSU 23 v Texas A&M 17
LSU 41:13 Texas A&M 18:47

Oregon and WVU were the most glaring example of how much owning the TOP can play in your favor. LSU just wore them the frick down and turned close games into blowouts. You're also rarely going to find yourself out of a game if you can control the clock effectively. People wonder why Miles has been able to win so many ugly games. It's because LSU always runs the ball between the tackles well and eats up clock, wearing other teams down.

What's your bowl record over the last 4 bowls?

only schools that can't win championships of any kind tout their bowl record. Texas A&M has lost 4 straight games to LSU. I'd be more concerned with hoping that changes than your bowl record. Maybe try winning the division with your 5 million dollar coach and 1.7 million dollar coordinator

only schools that can't win championships of any kind tout their bowl record (btw, Miles is 6-4 in bowls games, which is better than a lot of coaches). Texas A&M has lost 4 straight games to LSU. I'd be more concerned with hoping that changes than your bowl record. Maybe try winning the division with your 5 million dollar coach and 1.7 million dollar coordinator

And why are you piggy backing on Alabama? Because they've been able to do something y'all can't? And btw, LSU has beaten Bama quite a few times since the last time A&M beat LSU

yeah, but I'm not shocked that an A&M fan would turn this into an argument that TOP, by itself, can't win football games. Yeah, well no shite. But TOP can completely demoralize and wear out an opposing defense. I mean clearly you have to score on those possessions, but outside of college station, that's implied

Someone posted actual data statistics which prove a point that offends you. Why don't you take your ball and go home.

Data and statistics don't prove or disprove anything. They supplement and support assumptions. A famous former employer of mine once testified before a Legislative body in regards to statistics thusly...

"You can make a computer play, 'Dixie,' while it simultaneously plays, 'The Battlehymn of the Republic,' sir."

There's more than one way to win a football game. Statistics vary depending on the means utilized or philosophy employed. At the end of the day, an Air-Raid Team or a pass-happy/heavy variant team running Spread sets along their OL will need to win a championship in order to claim validity.

As of now, multiple Spread Teams have won or played for National Titles. Texas, Florida, Auburn, Oregon and Ohio State are all pertinent examples. The problem for Air-Raid or variants from this tree of the spread formation teams is that they all emphasized heavy doses of the running game and incredibly mobile quarterbacks to contend.

Even with Sumlin's offense, it seemed at its deadliest when JFF-a gifted runner and improvisational offensive talent-was at the helm.
