2005 LSU was interesting. Our only losses were a fricked up game we had to play on Monday due to hurricane Katrina, where our players had 10-15 family members living in their dorm rooms, and to UGA in the SEC championship game where we had played 12 straight weeks without a bye due to Katrina. Without Katrina I think that team goes undefeated without losing and is in this argument. Such a strange year

If Shockley doesn't hurt his knee vs Arkansas, UGA steamrolls UF, beats AU too and would have been undefeated heading in. That 2005 UGA team was better than it gets credit for (although nowhere near being included in a best of the last 25 years discussion).

Y'all couldn't steamroll us during the Muschamp years.

Just going off this, I pick 2012 Auburn considering its college football and 1 player can carry you like Cam did for the Aubs that year.

The 'best' 'team' overall is definitely 2009 Bama position by position, though UT is close.

I think since the OP said best, I'm giving 2011 Bama a slight edge over 2008 UF. Clearly 2012 Aub, LSU 2006, 2011, Bama 2009, UF 2006 could beat anyone. Hell LSU 03, 05 and 07(if healthy, many injuries between games 4 and 13), several other teams for Bama, Auburn, UF, UGA, and UT could beat anyone as well.

I agree with all of this except the presumption Alabama would have won the Sugar Bowl, they are now 0-3 in that thing when the game is not a title game.

2008 UF. Just ridiculously stacked with playmakers on both sides of the ball.

Solid choice.

Oh and to the person who said 1998 TN. I sat there and watched Arkansas pummel them that year only to gift wrap the game to them at the end thanks to their own ineptitude. 98 TN was good but they weren't dominant by any means.

Great teams have to find a way to win when all hope is lost. Ratliff destroyed Bullsworth, and Steoner tripped over the center's foot, causing the stumble, causing the fumble.

Arkansas still would have won, but Travis Henry, WOULD. NOT. BE. DENIED.

ETA : Travis Henry impregnated 4 women later that night.

I have an outsiders perspective.....

1: 2009 Alabama
2: 2010 Auburn
3: 1998 TN
4: 1996 Florida

1996 Florida was one of the better one loss teams that I can remember.

1998 Tennessee I think has the best claim.

They beat the Big East champ (when it was a good conf. with Cuse, VT, Miami, ect.) Syracuse when they had Mcnabb
The ACC Champs and #2 FSU team
Arkansas when they were 8-0
UF when they were top 5
They destroyed UGA, Bama, SC, UK, Vandy and pretty much everyone but a few close games

Also they had guys like this

I'm the only unbiased voice here, so allow me to put in my 2 cents.

the absolute best team, regardless of record, was 2008 florida and to be honest it's really not close. defensively they were just as good as the 11 lsu and alabama squads, but light years better offensively. admittedly, their loss is a head scratcher.

if we are only considering undefeated teams, i'd probably take 09 alabama. i think the 3 best sec teams I've seen have all had a loss, 08 uf, 96 uf and 11 alabama.

2011 LSU is a big enigma. they potentially had the greatest resume of all time, but as someone pointed out, they were #86 in total offense. there is no way that a team featuring the 3 headed combo of les miles, jarrett lee and jordan jefferson could be the GOAT of anything, and the BCSNCG against alabama exposed that.

1a 2011 Bama
1b 2011 LSU
2 2008 UF

Efficient offenses and ferocious defenses. The way football was designed by God to be played. Those 3 would wipe the floor with all the other teams.

tough team to analyze since the SEC in 96 was nowhere near what it has been the last 10 years. however, of all the 1 loss teams they have by far the "best" loss and they dominated conference play. I can confidently say they were a better team than 98 tennessee, but comparing them to more recent teams is harder.

1996 florida- 47 ppg offense, 17 ppg defense
98 UT- 33 ppg offense, 14 ppg defense

florida lost by 3 @ FSU, then won by 32 in rematch.
tennessee beat FSU and their second string qb by 7.

2008 Florida Defense was not better than 2011 LSU/Bama.
