Well, with offense ratings don't matter as much. Any Arky fan should know it is easy to find diamonds in the rough on that side of the ball. JFF, Evans, and even past leaders like Tannehill were three stars.

Also here in Texas, high schools put an emphasis on offense. Many have moved to a spread system, so there is an abundance of elite offensive players but less elite defensive players than 20 years ago to recruit.

When you are talking about defense, especially on the line, you know who the good players will be when they are in junior high. It is much less about execution and more about being born with a combination of size and speed. The hardest fought recruiting battles every year are over defensive lineman for this reason.

In the past, even when A&M was signing enough four stars for consistent top 25 classes (so Arky level), we weren't signing up elite defensive lineman. But the top Texas D lineman in 2013 already signed with A&M, and the top Texas D lineman of 2014 is about to. That is where Sumlin is earning his money.

Seems odd, you have the worst defense in the league yet you have five star D linemen sitting on the bench. Why is that?

You rantards crack me up.

"Sumlin Gone. USC is gonna money-whip him, and then you guys are screwed."

"What? 5 Million? He hasn't done anything yet! You guys are screwed!"

I still don't see why those two thoughts are mutually exclusive.

For him he was not ready yet, not far enough in development. We are building for the future, and the last thing we need to do is traumatize our top players Garrett Gilbert-style trying to go from the 100 and something worst defense to the 80 and something worst defense.

That is the whole point of this contract- we see the future as bright. JFF was our Ricky Williams- the start of a new era. His time was not the end goal.

So who will be your quarterback next year if Manziel leaves?

I honestly don't know. Maybe Kenny Hill. Maybe the five star QB we are bringing in. We have good options.

You just said you didn't want to throw a freshman to the wolves a la Gilbert.

No, I said I don't want to throw in a player who is not ready yet a la Gilbert. Sometimes a freshman is, and we have a few starting this year, sometimes they are not.

I trust the coaches to make a good decision and to start the QB that gives them the best chance to win.

Manziel is gone, and the smart money is on Kenny Hill. He's a stud. The 5th year senior (who will be in his third year under Sumlin) Joeckel might surprise people, or the true freshman #1 QB recruit in the country Kyle Allen might be too good to keep off the field, but the smart money is on Kenny Hill.

Whomever among those three wins the job is going to have to be good just to win the job. We are in very good shape at QB, despite the fact that a guy like Manziel is not replaceable.
