So take away the 3 and we still have #2 rush defense and the leading SEC sack leader in the conference...he's also projected as a first round pick in 2017

I know this seems biased, but I'd put LSU no lower than three. We return everybody from the two deep (all but one from 3 deep) and we had 3 starters with at least 5 sacks each on the line last year (in only 12 games). Most of them happened in the SEC (15 of 19 total) We also held up pretty decent versus the run.

I expect the line to be ridiculous next year, the best since 2011.

Yards per attempt is a much better gauge than total yards or yards/game.

They just don't have the personnel to run a base 3-4 yet.

I wish people would disabuse themselves of the notion that defensive alignments dictate player personnel. They don't.

All the numbers mean is how many guys have a hand on the ground and how many don't in the various levels of the defense.

So, to your post, yes LSU has the personnel necessary to run Aranda's iteration of the 3-4.

As for AU: there is a ton of talent on the d line. If they play to potential it could be a special year. I'm hoping that with improved d line play it will free up the lbs and dbs for improvement.

That is, if the weed has not permiated through the team as to 2012 levels. Oh, but that was spice back then so we should be good to go.

Yeah LSU definitely has the personnel to run a 3-4. Gone are the days of true nose guards, who don't pass rush whatsoever and just space eat. You have to have a guy who can bull rush and can play the 2-technique. Jarran Reed last was is a good example of a guy who could collapse the pocket, but was much better served as a guy who could stuff the run and force you run outside.

I don't know how much Aranda runs his nickle and dime packages, but I assume it'll be much like Alabama, where they will set up in 4-lineman quite often due to the emergence of the fast-paced spread offenses.

Exactly. Personnel and technique are more intertwined than are formations and personnel.

Certainly we'll likely see guys like Key drop into coverage to pick up slot receivers or TEs more often in this scheme. But just because will often be in a two-point stance, that doesn't mean he won't crash on run plays and make the same reads on option plays that a DE would.

Aranda himself said his "base formations" change as the game/opponent's game plan changes. So to call it a "true" 3-4 is a misnomer anyway.

Not really. The top 10 on the OP's list are all really good.
Not much in proven QB's (sans Swag and Dobbs) but dominant D-lines this year.

I don't think people really understand this. Everyone wants to be optimistic about their team, which is understandable but more than half the teams on that list are going to have great Dline play. 2-10 is not that far apart.
