What really gives Christianity a bad name are christians who hate other Christians.

I honestly don't care how openly religious some is or claims to be. I really don't care about all of the religious stuff he posts. All I care about is him winning us ball games. He can tweet whatever he wants to tweet.

Then undoubtedly once caught you always see said person further espousing their Christian faith in an effort to beg for forgiveness as though they just lost their way.

This is another tenet of Christianity. Forgiveness.
You should know (and probably do know) that some take advantage of this, too. Some Christians say, "I am only human, and destined to failure." but that is not what is taught in the Bible either.

quote:

I am and will always be leery of those that wear their religion on their sleeve and are so public about their faith.

But, that is what Christianity is all about. Reaching others. You can't do that if you keep your faith under wraps and out of sight.
quote:

Those are the people that usually end up being full of shite the most.

Not really. It is only because a big deal is made of them because they are in the public eye. There are plenty of Christians who are public with their faith and do exactly as they espouse. Do they fail at times? yes. But they are also doing the best they can to live a life consistent with their professed faith.

If your religion ultimately makes you a better person, I have no problem with it. Believe that your god commands that you paint by numbers with your feces if he also commands that you feed the poor. When you start demanding that I too must paint by numbers with my own feces. Then you and I have a problem.

Well keep in mind that we are called to spread news of Christ and save as many souls as we can. Lots of Christians don't go about this in a way that is loving. But it is out of love that we should do this. God loves you and thats the point.

Westboro Baptist and other "christians" like them have tainted many peoples' views of us. It's not that i think you should do what I want, It's that I genuinely have a concern for you as a soul and want you to know what I do. Believing what I do or not is between you and God, I just want you to know.

Also the prayer thing.. The bible talks about praying without ceasing and also says the prayers of the righteous man having great power to prevail. We believe it because the Bible says it. just trying to clarify that its not some superstitious thing we just started thinking but actually written.

We see so many "religious" people weep for those that have passed, when they should be thrilled, because their loved one is now in eternal paradise.

They aren't weeping for the one that passed. They are weeping for their own loss. I am a Christian and my father died last May. I still get chocked up at times. However, it is because I miss him and the interactions I had with him. Not because I think something horrible happened to him.

No. I'm saying I want people to feel accountable when they do something shitty and to act accordingly.

Hell, I do to! That's why I'm in church on Sunday and try to read and contemplate His word as often as I can. Hopefully someone with the same opinion as myself will someday influence this ill doer to relook at his life and become accountable for his deeds. We're all in this together. It reminds me on a story my preacher told us about when he was at seminary. He said that the dean there at Emory was a world renowned theologian and one day while just the 2 of them were in the dean's office, he asked the man, "in your opinion, what are the most important lessons in the Bible?" The dean replied, "' Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength', and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’....then he said, "the rest is just window dressing".

Ummm....it's the law, right?

quote:

f you truly believed that everything that happens is "gods will" then you would take none of these precautions because simply buckling your seatbelt is not going to save you if god has decided it is your time to go and contrary to that, if he decided it wasn't your time to go, you could run head on into a train and come out unharmed.

God also gave you a brain and reasoning. "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord your God." You don't put a loaded gun to your head and pull the trigger expecting God to protect you.

Exhibit B: Ray Lewis. Murderer turned football pastor.

No shite, when they were going to the superbowl in his last year, the interviewer asked him about the murder indictment. His response "Would God let his messenger do something like that?"

I about choked on my food laughing. Now, I'm religious, but I'm also not going to forget that Catholicism set history back about 500 years with the papacy being auctioned off to the highest bidder and mass executions being done in the name of God. Clearly, God's 'messengers' are capable of some shady shite.

ETA: I'm not comparing the acts of Freeze and Lewis, but more showing another example of someone using faith as a shield. Also, I hate Ray Lewis so any chance to bash him works for me.

I don't necessarily see it as judging him. Once saved we are given the ability of biblical discernment(basically deciding the difference between truth and error).

I think if you are a celebrity or in the public view and you wear your faith on your sleeve that is a great thing. As it is our duty to make Jesus known, and what better way then to use the gift God gave you to do that. But, that also comes with a lot more responsibility as you will be judged at every corner by non Christians.

I'm not comparing the crimes, but the purpose. They both use faith as a shield.

Yeah, it is. They both use the godly man act to protect them. Do you actually know what context means?

It certainly is. Remember Hugh Freeze comparing the NCAA investigation of Ole Miss to the crucifixion of Jesus?

So God doesn't want the people who live and die without ever hearing his name because they live in small, remote tribes that don't interact with civilization?

Sounds like an a-hole.

My experience says just the opposite. Perhaps you are just meeting the wrong Christians?

But...honest question. Do you feel the same about non-Christians that are hypocrites?
Even more to the point...do you get as upset at other coaches that do what Freeze apparently has done, or are you just mad because he is (or claims to be) a Christian? Perhaps your problem is not with the actions. Maybe you just have a problem with Christians in general.
