Carroll's teams were the best "big game" teams I can remember. They used to come out and utterly destroy other Top 10 type teams. However, they also would slip up and lose 1 game every year to a bad 7-5/6-6 type team.

I feel like that is a pretty clear difference in the coaching/management philosophies of the 2. Saban, no emotion, treat every play like it has a life of it's own. Carroll, emotion, which can lead to blow the doors off performances but letdowns against lower level teams.

Both were/are elite coaches.

Well first off USC was not a dynasty. They only won one true National Championship from 01 to 09. Dynasties are made by winning multiple titles in a short period of time. Now Alabama on the other hand, 4 titles in 7 years is a Dynasty. So Bama wins that argument hands down.

CFB Saban > CFB Carroll

NFL Carroll > NFL Saban

NFL Carroll got 2 SB appearances and one blow out win.

I remember USC claiming they were headed to a THREE PEAT!!!!

In the end they had nothing. 03 was really LSU. 04 was vacated. 05 was a loss. They have nothing. And I laugh.

I don't like Carroll at all but admire how good he is. But Saban put together something better than Carroll was able to accomplish. It'd be more of a debate had USC won 3 straight titles vs Alabama's 4. But USC didn't.

I agree, but only post-college NFL Carroll got that.

Pre-USC NFL Carroll was pretty close to Saban.

Carroll
4 seasons
2 winning seasons (50%)
33-31 (51.6%)
2 Playoffs

Saban
2 seasons
1 winning season (50%)
15-17 (46.9%)
0 playoffs

They take the edge with a well known over hyped award? I think you lost the argument with that one and you weren't doing well to start.

Pete Carroll had the following embarrassing loses AFTER his first year:
2nd season: 27-20 to KSU, 30-27 to WSU
3rd season: 34-31 to unranked Cal
6th season: 33-31 Cal (unranked), 13-9 UCLA (unranked)
7th season: 24-23 Stanford (unranked and a 40+ point dog)
8th season: 27-21 Oregon State (unranked)
9th season: 16-13 Washington (unranked), 47-20 Oregon, 55-21 Stanford, and 21-17 Arizona (unranked)

7 losses to unranked teams. 2 losses of greater than 20 points.

From 2nd season on, Saban has never lost to an unranked team, never had more than 3 losses in a season, and never lost by more than 14 points.

I'm biased, but the numbers don't lie. I'd take Saban's best years over Pete's best years. All the winning, more titles, and less WTH losses.

You are very biased yes. That is why you only posted one side of the story. Yes, Pete seems to have more upset losses. Alot more

1 point for Saban.

How about we look at how they do against great/equal competition?

Well, Pete dominates Saban.

Pete is 14-5 vs top 10 teams
while Saban is 10-11

That is a huge plus for Pete. Add into it his NFL success, it is clear Pete is a better coach when the playing field is even. It is also clear Saban does a better job of keeping his team focused against lesser competition.

graph is from last year
Saban went 2-1 against top 10 final rankings

The NCAA STILL acknowledges USC's 2004 title (and 2003).

The Associated Press (largest media organization in the world) acknowledges USC's 2003 and 2004 titles. And USC still displays the AP trophies on campus.

Saban built two massive empires in college football. That is pretty impressive. Lotta coaches succeed in one place but few can do it twice.

Saban is mo better in a tougher neighborhood.
