you should really read up on that situation a little more before you make those kind of statements. Just reading your post tells me 1) you must be young and 2)you've never really taken the time to know the whole story, way more political than the mainstream media suggest, all the way up to JFK who was trying to win support from both sides of the issue, which is obviously what you are basing your post on. You do realize he ran again several years after that and won thanks to the African American voters.
How does what Wallace did later in life (after he apologized to African Americans for the exact thing, and others (like the segregation now, segregation forever speech), that I am talking about) take away from the embarrassment of what he did at Foster Auditorium?
It doesn't.

I guess most of the sanctimonious toothless nation would have a hard time sleeping at night unless they took your same attitude.

It doesn't, but most people who know anything about Wallace, know he didn't have a change of heart later in life. He wasn't a segregationist because that was his moral fiber, he was a segregationist because he wanted to get elected. Racism is due to ignorance, but in Wallace's case it was due to opportunity.

This is true. And it was a fantastic opportunity for him.
George, don't kid yourself into believing he wouldn't have taken the exact same course of grandstanding at whatever school was the first to integrate in the state.
Unfortunately for people associated with the University of Alabama, it was first, and Wallace is forever linked with that day at Foster, even though they had already been admitted, and his only goal was to endear himself to those who opposed integration.

Typical. Thread asks about embarrassing incidents at your school, you talk about Alabama exclusively. Obsessed doesn't even begin to describe it. You probably need professional help.
Anyway, I'd say the actions of actual coaches, administration, employees of Univ of Alabama probably have the most sting (compared to the Updykes / crazy fans, most completely unaffiliated except for being "fans").
So I'd say the Price fiasco and Dubose indiscretions rank up there. The Albert Means stuff was bad too. Wasn't alive for the Wallace stuff, but that was really less about the Univ of Alabama and more about the politics of the State of Alabama as a whole.

I can't see how that makes Wallace any better. In fact, I think it makes him worse. He perpetuated hate by exploiting it for his own personal gain. frick him.

I don't, at all.

Exactly, which makes it our embarrassing image, not anyone else's, even if it could have been another school just as easily as ours.

Politicians pandering, dividing and hate-mongering for political/personal gain? Shocking! Glad that doesn't happen any more.

Before the Alabama game last year, we had fans saying the game should be moved to the Dome because it was supposed to rain.
That's as pathetic as it gets.

The entire period from 1997-2006 was pretty awful all-around. The NCAA stuff, the Fulmer stuff, the DuBose stuff, Fran leaving, Price stuff, hiring Shula in the summer, bad football, etc.

Most of the bama fans I see on a daily basis probably have no clue what happened in bama athletics during this time period. In any sport.
