I honestly don't run into very many people who are "Alabama fans" who haven't been Alabama fans for forever. Do these people who starting cheering for Alabama in 2008 really exist? I would assume most of them are in rural parts of neighboring states, I guess.

We have crazy, over the top fans, but quite frankly most of them were crazy and over the top in 2004 just as much as they are today. They just sounded a lot crazier saying we'd win the West with Spencer Pennington and Ken Darby.

ypical. Thread asks about embarrassing incidents at your school, you talk about Alabama exclusively. Obsessed doesn't even begin to describe it. You probably need professional help.

Anyway, I'd say the actions of actual coaches, administration, employees of Univ of Alabama probably have the most sting (compared to the Updykes / crazy fans, most completely unaffiliated except for being "fans").

So I'd say the Price fiasco and Dubose indiscretions rank up there. The Albert Means stuff was bad too. Wasn't alive for the Wallace stuff, but that was really less about the Univ of Alabama and more about the politics of the State of Alabama as a whole.

No just responding to a typical sanctimonious Bammer, who wasn't even born during that period but fails to study history to know why things happened. Then pretends that the t-bagger, Updyke and the wrecking ball woman do not represent Tide sports fans.

I never once said that they do or don't represent anything. I said I'm not embarrassed by their actions.

Seriously, for once just stop trolling or acting like your actual self or whatever this whole thing you do is. It's fvcking awful. I mean it is just nauseatingly awful.

you should really read up on that situation a little more before you make those kind of statements. Just reading your post tells me 1) you must be young and 2)you've never really taken the time to know the whole story, way more political than the mainstream media suggest, all the way up to JFK who was trying to win support from both sides of the issue, which is obviously what you are basing your post on. You do realize he ran again several years after that and won thanks to the African American voters.

Everyone you know knows what school your root for and vice versa in the South. I cannot think of a single bandwagon fan I know for college football. Several NFL ones though

Kind of was always what I thought. I'm sure there are a few here or there, but I never really have met people who were Tennessee fans in 1999 but are Alabama fans now. I've actually never met anyone like that.

Uhhh...yeah. In vast quantities. You may be blinded to it because you're a fan and don't give it more than a passing thought. But the majority of bama "fans" I end up striking up a convo with, it's quite clear that they are only fans because they're winning. I grew up in Gwinnett and right around that 08 time period the bama car flags and tags probably tripled.

I'll you an example from TODAY. They're doing some road work outside the office. One of the flagger guys comes in to use the bathroom. He mentioned that he hadn't seen something like we had (can't remember exactly, it's irrelevant) back home and I asked where he's from. He said Cedartown. I instantly say "oh Nick Chubb's hometown, cool. Did yall come up around the same time?" This guy looked fairly young so it was a valid question. He says "yeah actually I went to HS with him, I was 2 years ahead". I was like "man that's awesome. Guess you're a big fan huh?" He says "nah, I'm a roll tide". That's a direct quote. I said "oh I gotcha, any family ties there?" to which he said no. AFter that I just went back to my desk. Guy has zero affiliation to bama whatsoever, went to HS with one of the most famous and popular UGA players in a while who is STILL playing, but he's a "roll tide" anyway.

And I'm sure there are hundreds more like him in the area.

Yea - not to be a classist elitist doucher or anything, but the folks that I always kind of assume are 95% of those types (new fans of winning teams) are folks like that. And I just don't run into folks like that a whole lot.

Which also totally helps pile onto the "mullet nation" group. Awesome!

The last 5 times LSU played Aggy in football. It's embarrassing watching them try to compete in football against a far superior team.

I'm not necessarily referring to bandwagoners who are fans of one school today and another tomorrow. I'm more talking about front runners who may not even GAF about football or have no affiliation to anywhere, but decide to become bama fans just to have a team to pull for. One that, not coincidentally, happens to be in the midst of a historic run.

I'll have you know that the summer between high school and college I was a flagger guy on a road construction crew. Thanks a lot pal.

LOL - and I was a 13 year old umpire during that same time frame.

If I was doing that as my sole job at 37 it'd be a little different

The dark period. We have blotted it from our memory.

I'm not embarrassed at all about anything they did. What's embarrassing is how our administration handled it. That was a top 3 team we've ever had in our history and couldn't even play in the postseason.

IMO (doesn't mean much) he gets waaaaaaay too much undeserved hate. The guy won SEC POY in '76 en route to an SEC title. The dude is true UGA he just wasn't a good coach.

I worked with one. He was a Dye-Hard Auburn fan when he started here (around 2005). Gave us Gumps all kinds of grief about Shula and then Camback.

Then I kid you not, mid-season 2012 he walks in wearing a Bama shirt and said without shame that he was tired of rooting for a loser.

Of course, he also ended up getting fired mostly for being a loser....
