Again, that is a historical statement. If you mean over the past 20 years obviously it's not Florida. The SEC didn't start in 1990 though.

LSU bar none. Miles has cost LSU at least 2 Natty's. Unacceptable with that boat load of talent.
No team in the country has recruited as well as Alabama since 2007. Alabama is recruiting at a level that is just plain sick since Saban has arrived. Florida has recruited better than LSU since 2005. UGA and LSU have been near equals in terms of recruiting talent since 2002.
Miles has won 2 SEC Titles, 1 National Title, and played for 2 since 2005.
Since 2005, Alabama has won 2 SEC Titles and 3 National Titles. Florida has won 2 SEC Titles and 2 National Titles. Georgia has won 1 SEC and 0 National Titles.
So.......... Why should LSU be performing better than any of the other 3 programs in the SEC that all recruit better, or at worse, the same?

All-time I'd actually say us. We have a great history but it could be top 5 all time if we hadn't been so badly mismanaged for so many years. Fortunately those days appear to be over.

Sad but true. When you combine in state recruiting (loaded) with in state competition (none), UGA might have the best recruiting base in America.
I look at Richt like Jim Calhoun a little bit. Eventually, if you keep putting loaded teams on the field, you'll get all the breaks and win a title one of these tries. I also believe Richt hasn't reached his full potential as a head coach. He had to learn some hard lessons (loyalty to shitty assistants will get you in trouble) but he's on an upward trajectory right now. He will get a national title eventually if he keeps this up.
UGA, UCLA, Virginia, Texas are four of the most underachieving programs of all time unfortunately

Virginia?
As for the question at hand, probably Georgia.

Georgia is the obvious answer. There is no reason we should not have had at least 1 title so far in the BCS era. shite coaching from Richt in big games however always seems to do us in.

Virginia has been historically shitty and has whiffed on a lot of big time recruits in their own state. They missed on Michael/Marcus Vick, Ronald Curry, Percy Harvin, etc. If you've ever been to Charlottesville, it's a really nice place. There's no reason they shouldn't be better.

I know I'll get drilled for rocking the boat here, but the correct answer is Florida if we're talking all time.
UGA hasn't cashed in on national titles nearly as much as we should, but if your team isn't named Bama or Tennessee you have less SEC titles than UGA.
Florida did not win the SEC until the 90's. Just consider that, for a moment. I know it was a less populous state for many of those years, but by the same token Florida State was nothing until the 80's, same for Miami. They had the sunshine state to themselves and didn't win the conference until the 90s. More shocking than UGA only having 2 National titles IMO.
The second part kind of answers it doesn't it. Three programs, now powers with multiple titles who have owned the last three decades, took a long time to do it. Miami, FSU, and UF all came about into the power scene in the 80s. Don't forget UF was very good a few years in the 80's. Florida was more like South Dakota in terms of population when the Universities started. No population and basically just one massive swamp and forest. All three schools coming to power around the same time should make you think there was a reason for this. Florida wasn't a recruiting hot bed till Howard at Miami. Once he got the trend going, all three programs have been monsters.
Population is the answer.
1880 269,493 43.5%
1890 391,422 45.2%
1900 528,542 35.0%

1920 968,470 28.7%
1930 1,468,211 51.6%
1940 1,897,414 29.2%
1950 2,771,305 46.1%
1960 4,951,560 78.7%

I don't see a comparison. Calhoun won 3 national titles. Richt hasn't.

Florida passed Louisiana in population during the 40s and passed Georgia during the 50s, the South Dakota analogy is terrible.

Up until 1999, Calhoun was looked at as a choke artist because he took ridiculously talented teams to the tourney and couldn't get it done. Maybe I should have said Calhoun pre 1999. Richt will get one before he's done.

I'm from VA. There's a reason they aren't competitive.

The make up of the FL population matters as well.
