Last year vs Tennessee ... that wasn't so much Spurrier as it was his players and scheduling. It was a trap game, players let down, Spurrier was very frustrated and you could see it on his face. Tennessee got a lot of breaks. Tennessee wins on a miracle pass really. Those kind of games just happen sometimes.

Psh, excuses excuses

We outplayed you and beat you fair and square. The miracle was the fact that he could catch that pass despite the sc defender committing a pretty egregious pass interference.

Honestly, if you look at the recruiting, USCe, despite some of the great individual talent they've had, doesn't recruit as well as some of the other teams in the SEC.

I think Spurrier has a smaller margin for error at South Carolina, and so little mistakes, or his team overlooking an inferior opponent, can really cost them in games that their records indicate they should win easily.

He really is one of the better coaches ever, and can coach a team up better than most, but he has never been the most amazing recruiter. And that makes USCe vulnerable when they have a let down.

Just IMO.

Just looking at USC's losses the past 3 seasons (Final Poll Rankings):

2011:

8-5 Auburn in Williams-Brice (27th/29th)
11-2 Arkansas in Fayettville (5th/5th)

2012:

10-3 LSU in Baton Rouge (12th/14th)
11-2 FLorida in Gainesville (9th/10th)

2013:

8-5 Georgia in Athens (31st/NR)
5-7 Tennessee in Knoxville (NR/NR)

The 23-21 loss to UT was clearly the biggest head-scratcher. The 16-13 loss to AU was almost nose-to-nose with UT, but they at least had a winning season. Garcia played his worst game since perhaps his RS-Fr. season, and it spelled the end of his career at USC. Watching that game I felt AU's defense played it's best game of the season up to that point, as previously it was pretty porous....

But 5 of those 6 losses came on the road, 2 of them to top-10 opponents and 3 of them to top-15 opponents. As for 2013, the UGA loss came prior to all the horrendous injuries they would suffer that derailed their season, and the UT loss came right after the team and fanbase was energized by a close OT loss to UGA 2 weeks prior, and where they had a bye week to prepare for USC. They still were terrible losses where USC made mistakes and fumbled away opportunities to win...

How has USC responded???

2012:

Beat Arkansas in W-B
Didn't play Auburn

2013:

Beat UF in W-B
Didn't play LSU

2014:

USC will host UGA and UT in Williams-Brice this season, where they own the current longest active home game win streak in the FBS. Unfortunately they'll have to travel to Auburn again this season, so it'll be tough if they want to try to avenge the 2011 loss....
