In fact, baseball programs dig a deeper financial hole than any other college sport, according to the NCAA. In 2012, the median deficit for a baseball team was $675,000, with swim teams following close behind at $555,000 and ice hockey at $530,000.
By comparison, Division I men’s football programs reported median net revenues of $3 million and basketball programs reported $553,000, according to the NCAA. Men’s rifle teams claimed third place in median net revenues last season with $27,000. All the other men’s programs ended their seasons in the red.
This means football and basketball programs are shouldering the financial weight of everyone else, including the likes of top-talent athletes being courted by the MLB.
“If you’re a college player in baseball, you should love March Madness because it subsidizes baseball and some of the other sports,” Matheson said.

Division I-A baseball programs reported a median loss of nearly $700,000 in 2012, the highest among men’s sports, according to the latest available NCAA report. Numbers were not available for the University of Virginia.

Dude.
LSU draws more for baseball than basketball.
Actually, they draw more for gymnastics than basketball (at least til JJ or whoever can turn it around.)
Do softball, track, tennis, swimming, golf, gymnastics, soccer, lacrosse, rugby, etc get as much media coverage and broadcast time on ESPN and ESPN2 as college baseball ?????
Noooooooooo..

Baseball is an expensive sport, you go through thousands of baseball every year. At a few dollars a ball you could lose thousands just on that. Than you add in all the equipment, field upkeep, travel, etc. (In a 60+ game season you go through about 8000 game balls, so not including practice balls. You may have to spend 100,000$ on baseballs alone.)
But in the SEC it's in the green for many schools.

Every year, the College World Series is the only college baseball event that makes national TV. Even then it's relegated to ESPNU or the like. You can look at TV ratings, revenue, or any other metric demonstrating popularity. Football dwarfs basketball and baseball isn't even in the discussion. It's like comparing the WNBA to the NFL.
This is why the term "Big 3" with relation to college sports is found nowhere outside of this site. LSU fans invented it because their football tradition is just above average and their basketball tradition is terrible, but they want to seem like one of the big boys in the SEC.

What's the story behind many of the Vols being so vocally anti-college baseball?
Is there a historical antecedent here?
It seems to go beyond the shoulder-shrug/"meh, I'm not really a fan," and enters the territory of "I have to convince everyone I'm right about this."

They'll never admit it but a part of it has to be because Vandy is so good at it. This narrative really ramped up after Vandy won their title.
That's the same reason Vol fans aren't big supporters of Women's Bowling, too.

Every damn thread with you is the same lame stuff. I think every time you mention baseball, you use the word niche. Come up with something new.

Was traveling Sunday and listening to college sports Sunday on XM. And I noticed something during on of their station breaks.
The ad for their network, it claims the " The home for everything college football, college basketball, and all other college sports!"
So baseball I guess is in that other column?

When I was kid I thought college baseball was bigger than college basketball
It all depends on what university you follow
Here at UT we have tremendous pride in our baseball program so we believe it is one of the Big 3

Coastal Carolina vs. AZ is going to be a BIG ratings hit!
Is this really the national title game/series for D1?
LOL.

yeah, it's gotten more and more vocal the longer it's been since they've made the NCAAT. But you can bet your arse Lindsey Nelson Stadium was packed to the brim when they were in the supers in 2004.

I don't like the fans of college baseball that pimp it as on par with basketball or football.
