It just sucks there is so much frickin talent in this one division. You can have a top 10 team, but you are going to play 3 teams just as good. Hell we had the 5th best class in the country, and it got us 3rd in the west

Yes, TAMU is a peri-anal top 10 team.

this, plus how Strong does at UT will play a factor as well.

This recruiting cycle really opened people's eyes about how talented and competitive the SEC west is. This might be unprecedented in CFB history.

I know you are talking about going forward, but just looking at their final poll rankings since 2002 (as far back as ESPN's site goes), I think we need to see a good bit more track record before calling them anything close to a perennial top 10 teams:
2002 - NR
2003 - NR
2004 - NR
2005 - NR
2006 - NR
2007 - NR
2008 - NR
2009 - NR
2010 - 21
2011 - NR
2012 - 5
2013 - 18
So, they have finished top 10 exactly once. The above evidence of futility / mediocrity is shocking really. Even with JFF they finished 18 this year.
I agree they are well positioned in Texas and now in the SEC so things are going to be better, but right now I would say occassional top 10 team, not perennial top 10.

What's the most years A&M has finished in the top 10 in a row?
Have they managed to finish in the top 10 even 3 years in a row ever?

If South Carolina can do it, Texas A&M can do it

I personally think they lucked out when Texas decided to hire Charlie Strong. I think he is going to be a dud.
I think Strong would have a better chance if Sumlin wasn't at TAMU. I just don't think he compares well to recruits.
Someone called Strong Texas's version of Curley Hallman, in that both looked good because of the all-star QB's who played for them.

Recruiting success does not guaranteee success on the field. It makes it more likely but does not guarantee it.
Sumlin's defenses have been horrible, so I think the jury is still out on whether he is really a complete coach or just an offensive guru. And not having a defense caused A&M to be nothing but a middle-of-the-road team in the SEC last year.
As for the SEC West in general, it is a pretty depressing place to be right now. Way too competitive and moreso than it has even been in its history.
That said, Saban and Les Miles will both presumably be retiring in the next few years and coaching changes always bring uncertainty, particularly when Saban is the one you have to replace.
And both Malzahn and Sumlin have at least entertained the idea of jumping to the NFL.
Things will change; they always do--and usually unpredictably.

Can say yet but I think they will be.

I'd say we are in the best position in the entire country while Oklahoma and tu are down. We are having our pick of the litter in Texas and Louisiana. Just wait for Hugh Freeze to get his first win in Tiger Stadium to kick start the decline. #2for5 will be seen as the pinnacle.

A&M has finished in the top 10 a total of 12 times out of 78 years the AP poll has existed.
That's 15%
So basically they finish in the top 10 once every 7 years, over their whole history.
So ya, no.

No, not until we earn it.
BUT once we joined the SEC we went from being a top 30 job to being a top 15 job easy. So given enough time that will change us from a top 30 program (which is where we are historically) to being a top 15 program.
Honestly Texas doesn't hold us back that much. Look at Florida- UF, Miami and FSU have BCS titles. In a state like Texas/Florida/Cali more than one national title team can survive off the talent.
The bigger issue is how many battles for recruits we win vs OU and the rest of the Big 12 and the rest of the SEC. This offseason the results were as good as we could hope. OU has given up on Texas talent it seems and none of the rest of the Big 12 had elite 5 stars. We can't want more than that.
Texas will be back eventually. Even if Charlie is a bust they have too many advantage$ to not bounce back one day. And any smart Aggie wants them to bounce back a little if only to lengthen the life of the Big 12.
I mean, Texas is the only player that can really end that conference. If they are happy teams like OU, OSU, etc. are stuck with that Big 12 ceiling and we have a built-in advantage over many of the teams in this region.

Sort of my point. I thought a guy like Mora or James Franklin would do some serious damage at Texas. Strong is just a "meh" hire to me.

Not sure but their 2012 top 10 finish was their first since 1994.

If strong has a good season at UT, then aTm will take a big hit.

I'll say top 15 team. Over the long Haul I see A&M as the Georgia of the West. Consistently good, not great and often falling short with an occasional run at Atlanta. Hopefully we can fare better than that but it's better than being a cellar dweller. JMO

I don't think 2014 Texas A&M is anything like those years of medicority. Everything is new and fresh in Aggie land and the good vibes are flowing. I think they were a sleeping giants.
