Florida has UGA and FSU ahead of LSU in their rivalry games.

LSU is without a true rival

I was in a rivalry game in 1965, not so much since Alabama’s rise with Bear. The combination of Bear and desegregation broke Ole Miss. They started to recover under Tuberville, until he left in his pine box for Auburn. Cut did a wonderful job, but OM didn’t have the patience to let him sort things out post Eli. Frankly , I think they would have made it to the SECCG if they kept Cut. All he needed was a little help recruiting wise. Once Bear rose and OM fell, Alabama displaced them as LSU’s rival. I attended LSU from the late 80s through early 90s. Ole Miss was the party game and Alabama was THE game. (Auburn too, but we really didn’t play them much prior to 87).

They definitely do, but we are usually third or fourth on their list of rivals behind FSU, UGA, and UTk. It’s just a weird situation for us where all of our rivals feel that way, and there is no consensus for who our biggest rival is. Ask four LSU fans who our biggest rival is and you can get four different answers depending on age and where they grew up.

This is actually really accurate. And yes its backwards and doesn't make a ton of sense.

If we beat LSU it typically means we had a pretty good/decent season so we can ride high that offseason.

If we lost to MSU then we're fricking miserable that offseason.

I just had to google last year's Egg Bowl to make sure we actually won the game.

It was more of the GOB network than desegregation. But the issues with desegregation was part of that same GOB network so I'm not saying it WASN'T a factor.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL no. Cut was fired for several reasons. One of which, was a complete failure at recruiting a program that had legitimate excitement and national exposure. We were fricking awful after Eli left.

I think Ole Miss could've been decent with O.

He was building a good foundation and Nutt got to reap the benefits.

seems that Arkansas has surpassed LSU in the Ole Miss rivalry minds

It's been the weirdest game of the year for a while. I don't consider Arky a rival. Never have. Never paid any attention to them until Ole Miss hired Nutt and ever since then they've taken a shine to us.

Both fan bases are now firmly on the frick Houston Nutt wagon

O was a great recruiter. We had to take a lot of marginal players and remember a lot not making it on campus or past freshman year for off the field issues. Great recruiter but he couldn't get the right coordinators or refrain from micromanaging play calling. He tried to do too much and wasn't equipped to handle it. It's easy to say now but I really don't think he could of ever gotten out of the rut at OM.

And the SEC tried to manufacture a rivalry with the Battle for the Boot game with Arkansas. It made that Arkansas game more interesting, but nobody would claim that Arkansas is our biggest rival.

Probably more like >70. Since 1971 (when those 50 y/o were born), LSU is ahead 33-15-1. OM did a lot better against LSU the 20 years prior (1951-1970).

Then again, maybe the kids of those 70+ were raised to see LSU as a rival, so that might count the 50+ age group.

I think a lot of OM fans just say LSU is a bigger rival to mess with State fans, like MSU is beneath them. Even though State has won more Egg Bowls over the last 30, 20, 10, and 5 years.

you had to go back to Johnny Vaught to get an Ole Miss football team with a national puls

Yeah it's definitely possible that he could have gotten Ole Miss "decent". And specifically "decent". He built a solid team but just needed a good quarterback. We never got a chance to see what he could have done with that team.

That being said I don't think we win 9 games in 2008 with O. But I don't see us winning 2 games a few years later with him either.

No shade to Ole Miss but they just haven't been good enough on a national level lately to make this a big rivalry type game year in and year out for the younger fans.
Yup. If OM had pulled out a few of those 5 losses by 3 points or less, it may be considered a bit more of a rivalry. The fact that OM lost those close games, while also be blown out 6 times makes it difficult to remain a "rivalry" in many fan's eyes.

Hugh Freeze didn't sustain anything long enough to even come out of the division. So much for knowing your Johnny Vaught history.

That I can see, they dont have anyone that considers them a primary rival

You made the asinine claim no Ole Miss team has had a pulse since Vaught was the head coach. Are you forgetting the success Hugh Freeze had from 2013 - 2015? Are you forgetting the two consecutive losses the Rebs dealt Bama? What a ridiculously incorrect opinion

You're giving yourselves too much credit in thinking we're taking your thoughts into consideration when we talk about our rivalries.

Don't get me wrong. The Egg Bowl is big game. But we get fricking hyped for LSU weekend and demand it go back to Halloween. Meanwhile....them moving the Egg Bowl back to the traditional Thanksgiving Day pisses us off because it fricks with our dinner plans.

Exactly this. I think a&m was heading that way, but with Texas joining it will be hard to see it reaching primary rivalry status now.

I used to do this. I don't anymore. There is no doubt who the Rebs' biggest rival is and the rivalry is very intense, especially since 2012.

I'm saying that national presence, thus national pulse, as a college football power, requires more than never getting out of your own division, much less even Atlanta, and sustaining success longer than a 5-minute egg.

No, you didn't say any of that. You said no Ole Miss team has had a "pulse" since Johnny Vaught, which is objectively false.

Take a lap.
