Paul Bryant in Uniform 1941
quote:
Military experience
12. Pearl Harbor was bombed on Dec. 7, 1941. Bryant enlisted for the Navy the next day.
13. Bryant was sent to serve in North Africa. While on the USS Uruguay, his troop ship was rammed by another ship. His ship, the USS Uruguay was rammed by another vessel and ordered to be abandoned. Bryant, a navy officer, disobeyed the order which resulted in saving the lives of his men. 200 others died.[1] Bryant was granted an honorable discharge to train recruits and coach the football team at North Carolina Navy Pre-Flight. One of the people he coached in the Navy was Otto Graham. While in the Navy, he attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander.[1]
U.S. Navy Lt. Paul "Bear" Bryant on Sept 7, 1942.
14. Bryant went to North Carolina in 1944 as a lieutenant commander to train enlistees. He assembled the North Carolina Navy Pre-Flight football team, which later became the nucleus of his first winning team at Maryland.
15. Technically, Bryant's first win as a head coach was with the Carolina Cloudbusters -- the North Carolina Navy Pre-Flight School football team. Duke counts the Cloudbusters' 13-6 win on Oct. 7, 1944. Bryant's victories with the team aren't counted on his resume.

Actually he did. Or so I've always been told. Before his career really got going, but he served I believe.
He was headed to become the head coach of Arkansas when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and the future of Arkansas sports. Instead of joining the Razorbacks, he joined the Navy. And once again....Arkansas was ALMOST great, but somehow got ph$%Ked.

His non-combatant ship was rammed by another non-combatant ship off of BERMUDA.
Never saw even an inkling of combat. That doesn't take anything away from his admirable actions in helping save his men's lives at all.
But, the fact is, his primary value to the war effort was coaching men who WERE going overseas to see combat, many never to return.
They weren't of a mind at that point in time to send men who they thought had value in the front lines to coach football in North Carolina.

The Germans bombed Pearl Harbor, which caused shortages in america including food. These people had grandkids in the 70's, one of whom stated "As god is my witness, I will never go hungry again". Hence, Bert is fat because the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.

Coach Neyland had been a head coach for 14 years (1926-1940) before Coach Bryant became a head coach (1945).

Bryant joined the Navy in 1942, and took a break from real coaching, although he was an assistant coach for two teams at Navy flight schools. He also spent a year and a half serving at sea.
So, yes, he took a break from coaching for the war.

Regardless of job, the duties performed by that generation were awe inspiring. On a related note, I think Bob Feller served on the USS Alabama.
