13 jet sweeps for 30 yards. Not good football

I do appreciate the football talk, though. One of the main reasons I quite the State boards was the idiocracy of know-it-all e-coaches.

A few years ago, some MSU fans started complaining that Mullen never called screen plays to our RBs. It was mind-numbing trying to explain that since we didn't have a legit threat at WR to get in the deep middle, Defenses were just going vanilla 2 deep and keeping everything in front. RB screen calls would have ended with a poor kid in the ER.

Two of them resulted in first downs and a third resulted in a TD - but four lost yardage. That feast or famine can be quite frustrating but you said:

it also got us in a 24-3 hole

And as I showed by detailing what killed each drive, that is utterly and absolutely false.

You don't like them. Fine, I understand that and you've got a lot of company - just don't resort to factually untrue statements in an effort to support your position.

And again, congrats on the rings. That's an incredible experience the rest of us just dream about.

I just want to use the great Wrs and tight end that we have. Not just Ridley, all of them. A jet sweep or 2 is great but 13 was very very excessive. Fact is the first half we can probably 10 of the 13 and were down, and the second have we hardly ran any and went on a 45-6 run. Not all offensive I know. Just would like to see better play calling like kiffin usually does.

I think we will. IMO, you hit on it earlier when you said he was limited. While he looks great, Hurts is still a true freshman and I'm pretty sure they're protecting him and opening things up as you go.

I suspect the Kent State game will be a lot like WKU where they spend a lot of time NOT calling plays they know Hurts can do well and instead working on the downfield stuff.

That's the great thing about winning the OM game - Bama is still undefeated and now Hurts has a couple of weeks to expand his range until another legitimate challenger arises. I really think the teams on the back half of the schedule are going to be in for a pretty rough time.

What game did you watch? I went back a few days ago and watched the whole game again looking for them. I counted three total for the whole game...Ridley's TD being the last one.

Go back and watch the video and link the point where we ran another one.

He runs those screens to make the defense run left to right. Typically done to run defenses to the floor. He's not stupid. AKA: he makes over 7 figures. More than us commenting on an internet forum.

edit: clarity

Well, shite. Why doesn't Saban just give you the headset and let you be offensive coordinator for a game?

We are not saying you or Op are wrong in thinking that they could negatively affect a fast start. If you notice Kiffin over course of last year he built in subtle wrinkles off bubble screen. It's numerous thing it does to a defense as other posters have mentioned. Anyway it's been a joy to read most of these post about x's and o's in this thread....it rare a "jubilee" so to speak on the Rant.

It's a setup play. You're only trying to pickup 3-5 yds or so to get to 2nd or 3rd and short and maybe your skill guy can make a move and get free once in awhile. Same as a running inside.

Exactly. I hope we work on hurts weaknesses this week, and I know I'm a homer, but I hope Barnett gets some throws as well. Roll Tide!

His point is spreading them out helped prevent them from stacking the box late. They lacked depth and Alabama took advantage of it. Alabama does not win 2 sec championships and a national title without Lane Kiffin and his game plans.

Saban

“People complained to me this week, ‘Well, we ran jet sweeps and they weren’t any good in the beginning of the game,’” Saban said. “Well, Ole Miss was putting so many guys over there that when we ran the counter, we averaged about 168 yards per play on it back the other way. So nobody thinks that the jet sweep had any impact on that, that they were putting so many guys over there, aight, that now when we go back the other way, they’re soft.

“So these are things that people don’t necessarily understand, that things are sort of packaged together, aight, and complement each other and one complements the other. So one of the reasons that we were able to run the ball so effectively inside last week was because they were so worried about the flanks. We sent some kind of jet motion 28 or 29 times in the game, and it was very effective for us even though we maybe only handed the ball off to the guy three times.”

That long near-TD run by Harris was off the jet sweep motion pulling the ILB out of position as he followed the motion. Howard pulled and had nobody to block for a good 10-15 yards because the LB was motioned out of the play and they had their safeties so deep.

EDIT - It was actually 20 yards before Howard had someone to block. Here's the play..
