No, not really. Too damn boring for the most part.

I did follow Spurrier at UF though. Only part of the SEC that was exciting in the 90's. I remember him shredding people, but I also remember him getting a great run of QBs. I wouldn't be surprised if he beat Chavis then, he beat everyone then.

It seems pretty clear to me the defense was higher rated than the offense that year.

Instead they talk about how they expect the SEC's best defense to get better.

That either means one of two things:

1. LSU fans only care about defense and therefore cannot even consider the concept that maybe that unit might take a step back requiring another unit to step forward

or

2. Chavis was a huge fraud that is easily replaced

Nothing else explains how LSU fans have tried to rationalize the situation. Given the instance to go with this line of thought even though it is less logical leads me to wonder if maybe Chavis is a fraud. Hence the thread.

Damn, showed your hook.

I'll bite anyway because I'm bored.

We had an equally as badass defense with Bo fricking Pelini as our DC. Our talent and TOP offense is a perfect scenario for any DC. Chavis was a solid DC for us, but its not like he is the only one who could do this. That's why the sky isn't falling.

We need to make a solid hire and we shouldn't miss a beat. Now, if we hire Mike Stoops or Kevin Steele, I will not be a happy camper. A BAD DC can certainly ruin us (see 2008). However, anyone competent will give us top 15-20 annually.

Again, our defense was good that year. He was wrong.

Our offense was unreal though. Led nation in 3rd down % and had a 3,000 yard passer, 1,000 yard rusher, and 2 1,000 yard receivers. We ate up tons of clock and had great efficiency. That was EASILY the best offense under Les Miles. We didn't have enormous yards or points because we ate up so much clock and limited possessions in each game.

Yes. He is a good coach, but Chavis was not much of an asset for LSU recruiting.

For Miles system it was awesome. You'll never see a 2,000 yard rusher or a 3,500 yard passer at LSU. It was extremely efficient.

But can't you see by looking at the teams in the playoffs that this will not win championships anymore?

It's ok if you want 9 and 10 seasons but you need OUR offense and YOUR (Chavis's) Defense in today's game

Impossible to coexist in their current state. That is what we are trying to say.

And lol.

Alabama had the offense we TRY to run for their last 4 championships. We raped our 2011 schedule with that system, including Oregon and West Virginia away from home in a year they both won BCS bowls.

With Jarret Lee and Jordan Jefferson at QB.

Bama did it with Kiffins help and made it to the playoff.

Sure it will. Alabama has won multiple championships.

Alabama's defense was not incredible this year and they still had a power running game to eat up clocl along with the nation's best WR.

You had #122 TOP.

Bama had #20 TOP.

ETA:

Again, they cannot coexist. Your shitastic TOP would kill Bill Belichick's defense.

Right. Plus, LSU often took great athletes and converted them to D'backs. To have a dominant defense that Chavis can work with, you need to devote more recruiting resources to the defensive side of the ball. You can't sign 7 WR's in one class.

If it was a hook I would have hidden it. I did kinda try to bury the lead a little, but only to get actual discussion and not troll responses.

I never know with you LSU fans. Sometimes you want nuance, sometimes you want in-your-face. I made a judgement call with this thread that I would try to put forth a complete question/argument rather than a "Y u no like Chavis LSU? Ur offense suxors, so y blame Chavdog?"

Was I wrong? Would rantspeak have gotten me a better discussion in this thread? I don't think so.

Totally not what I am going for.

What I expected to see when Chavis left was something like:

"Well now our offense will have to play better to prevent situations where we can lose a game in the last two minutes."

or

"Well we will just have to recruit better to overcome the loss of his coaching on defense."

or

"Well maybe we will move back towards a large defense that is better against Bama."

or SOMETHING like that.

But I have seen almost none of it. Instead of I have seen people criticize Chavis for what to me looks like very minor issues, and have laid the recent lack of LSU football success at his feet. It makes no sense.

Even if is was all rationalization and coping, the logical play is to rationalize that something Chavis admittedly sucked at will get better. Like recruiting. Instead many are expecting a coaching upgrade.

If I was trolling I would have gone after the insecurity that drives the rationalization. Instead I am curious why yall went one direction instead of another, because the only reason I can see to do that is because Chavis WAS a complete fraud yall are happy to dump.

Its simple, I don't want to get my hopes up for a fraud. Hence the thread.

One name you need to know. DJ Welter. With one weak link on D LSU got GASHED. If Beckwith woulda been a bust LSU loses 1-3 more games this year.

You currently have 8-9 DJ Welters starting .

Yeah, but the FSU of that period was one of the best dynasties in the history of college football. That wire-to-wire 1999 team would beat every team in this year's playoffs.

It kinda is. Honestly I thought defense was 90% talent until the recent A&M defenses were so bad that I now think its like 85% talent. That still sucks, it means where you end up on NSD determines your defense more than where you line up on gameday.

That is why I like offense, it is more like 65% talent and 35% coaching. You can run the right scheme against the right team and completely negate their talent advantage. For a guy whose program has only recruited in the top ten for three years out of 15 it makes sense I would prefer the side of the ball that is less talent-driven.
