Mark Richt is entering his 14th season at Georgia. He has been one of the most consistent winners in the SEC in the last 10 years, but has failed to produce a National Championship team.

However, I applaud Georgia for being patient, giving him time that too few programs do nowadays. Some of the greatest coaches in history took many years to win their first national championship, but unfortunately, most programs would have fired them:

Tom Osborne- 22 years
Joe Paterno- 17 years
Bobby Bowden- 17 years at FSU (27 total)
Don James- 17 years at Washington (21 total)
Vince Dooley- 17 years

There are probably more... these are just the ones who come to mind. It seems that year 17 is the year to win it. I think if Georgia keeps him, they'll win a championship within the next 10 years.

... but the rant told me that if he hasn't won one yet, he never will.

ETA - truthfully I wasn't really sure how to respond to this thread

There is no hook, actually. (Although I am curious as to what you think it is)

Just a late night observation I felt the need to share with you all

His is the only notable program in a state with more talent per capita than any in the country. He should have done more by now.

Agree. Who could we hire that would be better? And Dooley, who everyone loves in Athens, didn't win a title until his 17th season. Hope our patience pays off.

He's another one I'll add to the OP. Damn, there's something weird about year 17 though

Georgia has had some terrible luck whereas some other SEC teams to win titles during the Richt years have had some great luck. Nothing you can do about that

also had good chances in 2007 and 2002. Maybe even 2005 if Shockley doesn't get hurt midseason.

Exactly. You don't think Paterno, Osborne, and Bowden had the talent before 17 years to win a championship? Sometimes it does just come down to luck. Paterno went undefeated 3 times before winning a championship and then finally won his first with a 1-loss team. Bowden was faced with the unbelievable rise of Miami and came close several times beforehand. I guess you could say the same for Osborne.

You're ignorant if you think the lack of some luck did not have anything to do with Richt not gaining a national titles. '02, '07, '12

True but I also mean your opposition too. ND was going to lose to pretty much any team pit against them, let alone SEC team. Winning the seccg meant winning the natty in 2012.
