Cockrell's Missouri Brigade and Jo Shelby's Iron Brigade were some of the best troops to fight in any Confederate Army. They were very good troops and some of the hardest fighters that ever wore the gray. Jo Shelby and about 500 of his men refused to surrender and actually went to Mexico. Shelby never did surrender. I won't charge you for that history lesson.

Many credible and respected historians credit the Battle of Blackjack (not the Battle of Fort Sumter) as the first battle of the American Civil War, or rather, the first battle in the War of Northern Aggression.

As the official title of the war is The War of the Rebellion, I highly doubt any credible historian actually concedes this. Missouri remained loyal to the Union even though the populace was split right down the middle.

Why did he rob banks and trains? Who owned them?
Do you know what happened to his family? Ever heard of Reconstruction, Carpetbaggers, Freedmen's Bureau? Do you know what happened to native Missourians after that war that fought for or supported the Confederacy? It wasn't a very pretty time in our history. Many lost their homes and land or better yet it was stolen in many cases. Don't believe everything that you were told in a high school history class. There are two sides to a story. Class dismissed.

The banks that James robbed were local banks. They weren't part of any Federal system.

Oh, bite me. Ask the Northfield folks how they felt about their non-existant federal overlords. The bank- and train-robbing had nothing to do with extending the war. It was about stealing money. That's it. No complicated explanation necessary.

Weren't all banks local. I don't know of any Federal System Banks at that time. Lincoln had finally established the Federal Bank I belive in 1862 or 63 but none were ran by the feds if that is what you mean. My point was that just like the railroads, alot of the banks were also controlled or ran by Union men at that time.

The attempt to make the robberies about attacking the system is somewhat weakened by the fact that the James gang wasn't big on charitable giving. They stole to steal.

And they killed whoever got in their way. Criminals all claim to be idealists.

Nazis know how to spell avatar. I'm sorry you think future Army officers look like Nazis, though. Most in that picture went into the Army immediately after graduation, myself included. Low blow? Hell yes it is, and entirely deserved, you commie terrorist sympathizer.
