I'll tell you why he isn't on scholarship. It's because he's a decent walk-on. We're also trying to bring in a recruiting class and are getting tight on scholarships, with at least three or four big recruits still on the hook. He will get one as soon as possible after we bring in the recruiting class. Taking a scholarship and giving it to him right now, means we lose a scholarship for a highly rated recruit.

This is just about ridiculous. Last time I checked the kid chose to walk on at UGA and from what I can tell was never promised a scholarship. Again, it was his choice to go to UGA, if he wanted his school paid for I am sure he could have found somewhere else to attend. Kid's dad has lost his mind.

And for the guy who said he hopes Kirby doesn't hold a grudge. If Kirby is holding a grudge against a kid because of his parents he is already failing as a HC in the SEC.

This is not little league travel ball. If I were Kirby, I would just cut the kid if it became a huge issue and find someone else to kick. Parent in no way, shape, or form should be getting involved in a college football team's business. If they don't like something tough, either have your kid quit or deal with it.

The dad wants rigo to get a scholarship. Kirby both in the summer and right now has said no, we are not giving him a scholarship.

why he isn't on scholarship

Answered earlier in thread. For the same reason that other teams aren't lining up to give Walk On players that have been on campus less than 2 years a scholarship. It limits the number of signees you can take... If I'm not mistaken, UGA actually has room under the 85 scholarship limit right now due to transfers and Imac leaving, but no coach in his right mind is dropping a signee slot on a Walk On kicker who is not exceptional. Rodrigo is a good kicker. He deserves a scholarship in the fall assuming he wins the job again (which I expect he will). But to give the scholarship out now commits it regardless of whether he's healthy or the best kicker on the roster come fall. It's unfortunate but it's life.

Now that uga fans have been through this with Blakenship's dad, do they still think Mo Smith's family handled that situation the right way?

I'm just glad Mo Smith got the opportunity to play for Georgia.

Blank is on Hope and his tuition is paid for.

Daddy just wants the other perks.

Meal plan is killing him.

Then you haven't been paying attention. That's how most schools operate.

Every starting kicker at Tennessee has been on full scholarship. Just surprising you ask a kid to win games with just seconds left and can't give him a scholarship.

Kicks wouldn't even be possible without long snappers, and we've had many a long snapper be walk-ons throughout the years. In the early richt years often times our kickers and punters both were walk-ons. It's amazing people think mean ol' UGA is doing something different than what we (and I'm sure many others) do on a regular basis.

In the summer, rigo (a freshman who hadn't played a down) wasn't given a scholarship. That's basically SOP at uga. He was told we'd reevaluate. Now, in part I imagine due to 4 underclassmen returning (didn't see that happening) our scholly numbers are razor thin, and he's again told we dont' have 1 to give. Tha'ts life. It's entirely possible he could get one prior to the fall season with peopel transferring, getting kicked out, not making grades, etc.

The fact that he "won a game" doesnt' and shouldn't factor into this, IMO.

He didn't even win the job until like week 4

Both sets of parents were using the media to push their agenda. Is that not "remotely close"?

I didn't know this, then it makes more sense why he isn't on a full scholarship. Hopefully they'll give him a full scholarship if he is indeed your kicker next season.

You tell the Colquitt family no more children... The line ends. (I know I know... punters... I stand by the statement though)

But yeah, what the other guy said re week 4. It's hard to say he even "won" the job, Ham just ended up mentally imploding in the games so badly that they had no other choice. In practice, he'd been inconsistent and often unavailable ("banged up"). His range is not ideal. 8/14 made field goals were 30 yd or less (the 9th was 32). It is possible that he doesn't win the job next season. I don't see a scenario where you can commit the scholarship before he wins the job, and in the meantime cost yourself a signee in the process.
