Yeah man. Just here to talk football as objectively as possible. This is a great forum for that.

He won the UK game, that alone is scholarship worthy.

Smart needs to nip it quick. He doesn't need a Springdale HS situation in Athens like Arky had.

If I was KS, I would set a meeting ASAP with Rodrigo only and set my expectations for what I want out of a scholarship kicker. The nature of his position actually lends itself to clearly defined statistical goals to put himself in scholarship consideration.

You can't make any promises because you can't predict the attrition, but assure Rodrigo that you will appropriately consider him for a scholarship should he reach those clearly defined benchmarks. I would not allow myself to be bullied into giving a scholarship or even into the appearance of such, however.

Exactly the position the father has placed the kid in. Did more harm to his chances than anything else.

Seems a lot like they don't think Rodrigo is really good enough to take up a kicking scholarship

He isn't right now. He can't consistently get kickoffs in the endzone and has pretty limited reliable range.

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate him stepping in for us this year, but Smart has to do what's best for UGA.

I mean he kinda has, outside of publicly coming out and getting into a verbal battle with a player's dad.

This looney tune was pushing for a scholly for Rigo in the summer before the season even started, Kirby said nope. Now he's doing it again...and again kirby is saying no. He's showing he's not gonna be bossed around or make decisions based on what some helicopter parent thinks.

Wow this story really puts UGA in a tough spot. With all the early enrollees coming in plus guys unexpected returning they thought may leave for the draft, they simply dont have room to give a walk on a scholarship in the spring. They probably do come time for summer, but until then they either give this guy a scholarship and tell an early enrollee to kick rocks...or tell this guy they dont have room to give a scholarship till summer at earliest.

Eh, not really. It's unfortunate that this psycho parent is emailing all the state news outlets but this is commonplace at EVERY major school. Hell under Richt we routinely had our best FG kickers walk-on and then earn a scholly later. There's been many times where our starting kicker and punter have both been walkons.

The media may get bored and decide to make it a bigger deal than it is, but it's not going to change anything from UGA's perspective. Numbers are tight and we're bringing in what could be the best recruiting class we've EVER had. Do we want to use a scholly on an above average kicker when we coudl probably find another one on campus somehwere, or use it on another 4* recruit that could give us 3 yeras worth of better play?

Can you put a dollar value on that?

Look the kid won the job as kicker. Did a fine job for them.

But that's not worth a scholarship? And he has to take crap from a 4 million a year or so man, Kirby Smart?

Additionally Smart must be pretty used to dealing with 85 IQ or so people. Because his talking points didn't make sense. Not a future as a lawyer or high priced negotiator for this man.

Can a real dollar value be put on many things that are "potential future benefits" of decisions we make years in earlier?? From what I can tell the kid wasn't on scholarship to start, but still decided to go uga. Why?? Cause being a UGA player from Marietta is a better future benefit play than perhaps GA Southern or Furman, etc. They took a chance, and it hasn't paid off as much as they had wished.

Doing a "fine job" at kicker just isn't worth a scholarship, and has nothing to do with how much Smart makes. That statement shows how much you know about college football, because you would know scholarships for a school like uga isn't about the money. Especially for an in-state player. It's about the # they are allowed to provide per NCAA rules. Coaches need to work limit #s properly as the ROI is based on if that 1 out of 25 (or so) scholarships was given out properly to the best athlete in a position of need, and not if the actual monetary value of said scholarship is 2k or 50k.

I agree he is probably use to speaking to lower IQs that just have to take it, but the rest of your point doesn't make sense as it doesn't matter. He's a high price college coach at a big program. That happens to be his "dream school" too. He is where he's wanted to be, and making millions. I don't think he cares to be a lawyer or high price negotiator. Smart is past hitting "moving on up career ladder goals". He's there. He just wants to succeed now that he is.

What if they gave him a scholly, and he loses the starting job???? I think KS will give him one next fall when he proves that this season wasn't a fluke as well as getting better on kickoffs and beyond a 50 yards
