Rodrigo Blankenship missed four kicks all season.
Georgia coach Kirby Smart’s decision not to give redshirt freshman kicker Rodrigo Blankenship a scholarship for the spring semester has rankled Blankenship’s parents. And it’s rankled them so much so that they’ve released a statement regarding the coach’s decision.

His son can only put the ball in the EZ on kickoffs 30 or so percent of the time.

But kicked a last second FG to beat Kentucky.

Why not leave? It's not like he is going to play for a championship or anything?

Then don't be on the team

yep. He ranks 11th in kickoffs and 10th in kicking..we can spend the scholly better. We turning away people at this point who would start at other east achools in other positions.

The scholarship holders and backup punter his dad mentions are our starting and backup QBs.
Dude is a complete psycho.

I get defending their kid and trying to do the best for him, but coercing the coach by turning the issue into a public spectacle is never the wisest way to go about it. Now Smart is being pushed into a situation where he can either put the kid on scholarship and look like he was forced to do so, with all that implies about his control of the team and how he will deal with future disputes, or he can double down and give the appearance of discontent and dissension in the ranks. There's really no good outcome for this kid now, especially since he's now a target for public ridicule as well as retaliation from any coaches or players who aren't happy with the way his parents handled this.

I'm glad Smart is a good enough man to not seemingly hold this against RB. He seems like a good kid and if he works hard will earn a scholly eventually. But when we don't have room for a top 5 RB, we ain't giving a mediocre kicker a scholly.

I don't think our fans or players are against RB..most seem to just think his dad is nuts and feel bad for him due to that. He did us proud this year, but we are real tight in scholarships. Gotta sign the big time recruits while you can.

Blankenship needs to fire his agent for letting this bad publicity out.

Easy solution here: Go to another school. Not on scholly = won't have to sit for a year. If he wants to be an arse about it he can go through spring drills and just bolt right after. That way he gets all that practice time.
Plenty of schools would take that kid. As a kicker he doesn't need to be at a big time school to get noticed for the NFL, assuming that's one of his goals.

And he can go out and get a good education

His parents are handling the wrong way completely. They also handled his emergence weirdly as well with his mom tweeting about his nickname, it escapes me. I remember hearing about on 680 in ATL. The parents need to have a conversation with Kirby privately about this. Not in public. Another reason I hate social media.

His parents have demonstrated poor decision making for a while. It started with naming their new baby Rodrigo.

Back in my day we always had our coaches speak to us in person.
Now coaches might not even speak to a player before he graduates. The best coaches talk to their players early and often!
