re: Do you think that expanding stadiums beyond 100,000 is a good or bad thing...

South Carolina looked pretty silly when at the start of the 3rd quarter of our game this year there was about 20,000 fans left.
Which 5k were TN fans including me.

Very true. Arrowhead is not over 80k and it's loud and just as exciting as any college stadium. I believe Seattle's Century Link Field is not even 70k, atmosphere there is great.

It's a bad thing given current trends that show an increasing amount of people are willing to watch the games on a TV.

I don't think it's bad. I'm not sure why Auburn fans would come up with some fake reasons to dog 100k seat stadiums just because we'll probably settle in the low 90s.
I could give an absolute shite if we ever top 100. I do want stadium upgrades, but Louisiana has an entire state to itself, Alabama has the entire white trash nation it itself, we don't need that much capacity, at least right now.

Auburn wouldn't be considering expansion, it's big enough. JHS desperately needs an exterior upgrade - brick up the exterior and make it look nice & cohesive with the rest of the stadium.

There is a lot of that already, but I agree, that's where the effort should be and where it is likely going.
We do need more high dollar seats, but not necessarily "more seats" if that makes sense.

For those saying video option/ technology will keep people at home..... the personal viewing options at the stadium will be mazing. Imagine anything in the way of replay and alternate angles, etc. being pumped to your home tv can be available to your cell phone/tablet in the stadium. Now imagine the potential to have individual control of your replay angles, etc.

This thread is full of fail.
Stadiums won't be expanded beyond 100K for the simple reason that fans can't see the field from any farther than that. Fans in the so-called "nosebleed" seats already have to resort to using binoculars just to see where the ball is.

If that's what you're into......I'm not one to judge, but I'll stick with women.

In your analysis you dance around the issue I may be able to put in better focus.
The live experience engages all your senses while the TV version only engages your eyes and ears. We have a whole new generation who would rather experience a limited experience as long as it overstimulates the sight and sound because it it the lowest common denominator and it is the cheapest to produce to generate the most revenues.
As you note, rising cost (well beyond reason) has killed the live demand. If I attend a game in (insert local college venue here) they probably make money selling hot dogs at 50 cents and parking at a dollar yet they go to the extreme of selling the hot dog for 5 dollars and the parking for 20 dollars. I personally may love attending a live event and sitting with others like me and their families for the past 50 years but now those sitting around me are bankers and lawyers telling me how important they are and with no clue of the game actually being played.
My generation will die off, but the schools have not created the next generation to take my place. AD's are like farmers selling their current crop for the maximum value while keeping no seed back to sow for future crops. Sure all the AD's pay lip service to all that ail's modern attendance except the ones that really matter as it means making less in the short run to protect the income steam in the long run.
Look I am happy we have the SECN but several AD's and many folks within their offices have already confirmed that we have made a deal with the devil, and the due bill will come like death and taxes. When you see Commonwealth downsizing it is not for the good of the team, it is just dropping 10,000 of the poorer folks to accommodate fewer of the richer ones. In my personal observation this will create very real problems as richer folks seem to be event driven (top matchup games) and the poorer ones will attend all the games.

I am a fan of Notre Dame and Oregon's stadium. Upper deck seating kills the vibe. But I like the feel of older venues.

if SEC schools played other good teams they would fill the Stadium.

AU will expand with box seats and skyboxs, something in the 92K range. Jacobs and Gus both realized that recruits do not care or know the difference between a 90K stadium and a 100k+ stadium. AUs student ticket vs premium ticket ratio fits very well into JHS. Other schools are fighting those issues every year.

Just wish students at ALL schools could go the games, if they want.

I will say this; beyond the first 10 rows of the new North and South EZ sections in Bryant-Denny, the game is really difficult to watch and enjoy, especially if blurred by a few whiskey cokes before the game.
However, there seems to be enough demand to build it out, so from a business standpoint, by all means.
I will say this, however: bigger stadiums do not mean louder ones. While the new upper endzone sections make the stadium look more imposing, the only acoustic advantage is that it helps trap the noise from the lower endzones. The upper sidelines have a "hood" on top of it which helps the sound bounce back down.
Overall, if you got people buying 'em, why not? The structures look daunting, it's impressive to recruits and other campus visitors, and allows more folks to enjoy the in-game stadium experience.

Which is why A&M is kinda unique in this conversation. We have 40k to 45k students in primo seats to account for.

Who cares about "how it looks?"
If the extra seats only get used twice or three times a year isn't that better than not having them for those times?

The thing the actual gameday experience has over being at home is tailgating. ADs need to monetize that.

Meh. 30-35k. Maybe in 20 years it'll be that much but at the moment it isn't.
