Why 1940? The AP poll started in 1936 didn't it?

Just pick a year, I said pre-1940 because that was the general era when the Rose Bowl was unparalleled for prestige. It really doesn't matter that much.

In no way should Bama claim 1941. Everything else we do claim is legitimate using the standards of the day, and even the standards of TODAY (AP, UPI/Coaches, Rose Bowl champs).

Maybe quietly drop 1941 and add the perfect season of 1945.

The only system that awarded us the title was Houlgate. It's a bogus title.

So more than one selector has to rank Bama #1 for it to be a legitimate title?

I just always use 1940 as kind of the cut off point. The first poll was 1934, continuously run since 1936.

Our Rose Bowl wins were 1925, 1926, 1930, 1934.

Personally I think that if we didn't win the AP or the Coaches Poll (post-1936 when the AP poll started) that we shouldn't claim it.

I will admit at first look bamas titles look pretty shady but after some research there is at least 13 solid ones.

Yea, because Alabama changing it's national title claims would go over "quietly"

Back then the AP NC was given out before the bowl which we lost. Because of all the stink about us losing the 64' Bowl game they decided to give it out after the bowl in 65'. Well Bama needed the bowl win to be #1 in 65' so it worked perfect for us. I think the country was so pissed about Bama domination they voted ND and MSU #1 the next year even though they tied their game and Bama was undefeated in 66'. Can you imagine a team winning 2 NC's in row and then going undefeated the next year and not getting it?

Ah ok. Just made me nervous with A&M's sole AP title being in 1939.

Add: 1973 OU won every game and tied USC. I suppose OU, Bama, and USC should share this title.

I don't see how OU can claim a share of 1973.

Undefeated/untied Notre Dame played undefeated/untied Alabama in the Sugar Bowl. It was their first meeting and pitted Bear Bryant vs Ara Parseghian in a game that many consider to be one of the greatest games of all time. There were 6 lead changes and Notre Dame went ahead late in the game and won 24-23. ND was named the AP champion after the game.

Totally count it brah, the SOG System awards A&M the 1939 AP Title.

It was much worse before winning the three NCs between 2009-2012. Winning those three shut most people up. I stopped arguing the point on here around 2010, because so many 'fans' don't know what they're talking about when it comes to our NCs or their own.

Really, the only thing these threads are useful for is to make sure Tiger N Miami is alive.

And not only just going undefeated, that season for us was DOMINANT. 11-0, 6 shutouts, only 44 points given up all year.

Perhaps a bigger factor than "Bama fatigue" that year was the onset of the Civil Rights movement and continued segregation of the southern teams. I'm not sure ANY team down south might have been voted #1 that year.
