Every program has had bad coaching hires. LSU hired Mike Archer instead of Steve Spurrier in the late 80s and that began our downward spiral into the 90s.

Bama will be fine post-Saban. But I do agree, it all depends on who the coach his. Just don't hire Saban's recommendation. At LSU Saban recommended Houston Nutt for his replacement.

And shouldn't they? If after the first season, you have less than a 10 win season, a brick through a window is a perfect way to illustrate to a coach that he needs to try harder.

This is especially the case if your coach is a nasty Leghumping habitual liar who whines like a total girl at every single opportunity for decades and decades.

It's a completely harmless motivation technique, not at all comparable to a Merlin Olsen style leg cracking that Curry prefers.

Alabama wouldn't even let that bitch hire and fire his own coaches. :-) Total lack of respect for this count both then and now.

absolutely zero doubt in my mind they won't be what they are now. They wont' go back to the Shula days or anything, but it will be somewhere between that and what it is now. They'll win 10 games most years with some 8-9 win seasons and every couple years contend for the title. That's what they are as a program unless there is some legendary coach involved like Bear or Saban.

I'd say the biggest problem with your argument, is the fact that we've had more coaches win National titles, than any Sec team has won national titles. We are very capable of landing elite coaches. Or is hiring title winning coaches just pure luck?

That's a lot of wishful thinking. No doubt Alabama will go through cycles. That's inevitable. But to chalk of more than a century of success in football to the "luck" of having "legendary coaches" is extremely short sided.

So you're saying that Rich Rod would have won just as much as Saban? Or the 1960's equivalent would have won just as much as Bear? Give me a break.

Having lucked into great coaches is the only thing that seperates Bama from UGA or something. No, you wouldn't be Ole Miss without them, but you'd be just another top 10-12 all time program. Not anything to sneeze at mind you.

Yes it is largely right place at the right time. Albeit with Bear it was right place right time to get him as a player rather than coach.

You can do things to help or hurt your chances, but it's a crapshoot all the same. Surely you realize how perfectly the stars had to align for you to get Saban in the first place.

With the right coach they keep on winning , if they hire the wrong coach they could be like UF . Maybe they will do us all a favor and hire Muschamp .

Stallings won a title at Bama and averaged 10+ wins per season during an era of 11 win regular seasons.

He wasn't a "great" coach, but a very good one. Bama will be fine.

You could say the same about Paul Dietzel or Wally Butts

^^Excellent point ^^ I'm of the belief that Bama helps the coach become elite just as much as the coach helps Bama become elite.

Coach Bryant and Coach Saban were/are damn fine coaches, but the unlimited support and resources they were given propelled them to be elite coaches. They were both men that used a firm hand and took control of the program. Bryant had no AD to answer to, Stallings had a damn boob for a boss and still averaged 10+ games a year with an 11 game schedule.

Cool. That would mean Bama becomes a 7 to 8 win program until he is fired.

And so do at least 10 or 12 other schools.

When Little Nicky finally decides to hang em up, what will be the fate of Bama.

You know, I don't think that I've ever seen a thread like this about any other team. I'm sure that opposing fans care (to some degree) about what will happen to LSU after Les, UGA after Richt, etc., but you never see threads about those teams.

I wonder why that is?

Because people know they aren't going to get the same quality responses from those teams fans as they do from Bama fans for starting ones about any coach or player there.

But Bama helps them to become more elite, or eliter, in a mongrel French language.

You show me where a Dubose type can win an SEC championship, other than Alabama, and I'll show you an LSU QB that can complete a shovel pass without an interception.

Or much more likely, and the truth, no one really cares about any other teams like they do Alabama.

Hell, even a moderately successfully team like Opelika has a fanbase wherein 95% of them care much more about Alabama than they do their own team.

By the time an auNeck has reached an age where he is able to have a relationship with a cow, he already has Alabama's starting roster of the last 5 seasons memorized.

Hey, I'll take a Ron Zook over a Larry Coker type. So would Urban.
