You have far underestimated the talent level in Alabama, even when you include the fact that UA has to compete with Auburn. I think the past few NFL drafts have proven that with where the state of Alabama falls among the best states for talent.

[quote]Oh I believe it. There's even this one guy, in Farragut,TN, who was a Tennessee fan until 2001, then he became an LSU fan, then a UF fan, and is currently a Bama fan. He also likes Kentucky basketball and the New England Patriots.

History says they will (relatively) suck for a while, then rebound.

Post-Bryant: Perkins (bad), Curry(mediocre), then Stallings (very good)

Post-Stallings: Dubose(awful), Franchione (mediocre), Price (LOL), Shula (bad), then Saban (great).

I think Bama has learned their lesson and will go all-out for the best coach money can buy. We'll see how that plays out.

Simple answer.

There may be brief periods of mediocrity but overall they'll continue to perform at a very high level.

The SEC was founded in 1933. Alabama has won outright or shared at least one SEC title in every one of the 9 decades since. No other program can make that statement (LSU is closest with 7/9).

Nick will walk away one day, but Bama football isn't going anywhere.

I'd like to think so. It takes a certain kind of person to win at Alabama. You have to deal with a lot of BS and have to have a lot of confidence & ego to tell people to GTFO. You can never flip the switch off. Not every coach likes that or wants that.

As said earlier, timing is everything. Florida is a better job than Alabama (both are elite, Top 5 jobs). Its not like they've been making grand slam hires and that's mostly due to timing. Texas is the same way. It takes a proven, established coach in order to win at UA. Its not a job where someone can come in and learn on the job because they'd get eaten alive. If someone like that isn't available when Saban retires, then nothing is certain.

Also, God Help Us if we carry on the mentality of "Saban would've done it differently". That's the same shite that got us in trouble post-Bryant.

If they hire the right coach then they could not miss a beat and keep on going. However, if they pull a UF and hire the wrong coach then they could be like UF and have to build back.

It all depends on who they hire to replace Satan uh I mean Saban.

The only other current coach in college football that can approximate Saban is Meyer...and he has it made at tOSU.

My fear, as an LSU fan, is that Saban decides to step down around the time Chip Kelly decides to come back to college.

Kelly would be a monster at Alabama, I am afraid.

Since he's already deep inside SEC fans' head. He might as well eat some brains while he's there.

They will do just fine. They are not going away any time soon. With the level of talent that they have in high school now it is very hard to drop off for any prolonged period of time.

It is really mind blowing that The U is having so much trouble regrouping. Talk about waking the sleeping giant and that will happen at some point.

The 80s weren't that bad for Alabama football. They were good times going by the standards of almost any football program out there. They just weren't good by Alabama standards.

Dubose(awful)

Agreed. But he still managed to go 10-3, finish in the Top 10, and win the SEC in 1999.

Franchione (mediocre)

Disagree. Fran turned a 3-8 team into a 7-5 team over night and also had arguably the best team in the SEC before he gave up on the team in the final two weeks of the 2002 season.

quote:

Shula (bad)

No argument here. But he still managed a 10-win, Top 10 season in '05.

I see a lot of posts talking about bama simply "keeps it rolling". Nick Saban is perhaps the greatest college football coach, ever. Who's going to maintain that? Jimbo Fisher ?? Dabo ?

"The person who follows a dictator is always shot" the great Al McGuire.

History tells us that bama will not keep it rolling. Bama's own history tells us they will not. Post Saban they will be at least 1 coach away from competing anywhere close to Sabans level. Book it

They will hire their Ron Zook before they try and find their Urban Meyer.
