Either one of two things will happen:

1) We've seen what it takes to get to the top and we shell out to hire the next big coach. Now we know that tradition gets us nowhere and we have to work at staying on top. Saban has made Alabama a very popular brand in sports. It won't go away overnight once he leaves.

2) The good ol boys that hired Dubose, Stallings, etc. return. On Day 1, Saban kicked a lot them to the curb and restricted their access to the program. That element returns and we hire a Head Coach who is either a puppet or can't handle life in the fishbowl.

It'll be tough to maintain what Saban has done but Alabama won before Saban and we'll win after he leaves. Like everything, the timing of when it happens will probably determine the outcome. I don't see us returning to Shula caliber of football.

Timing is critical during a coaching hire, and usually beyond a program's control. I don't expect to see us win three titles in five years again, but I also don't think I've seen my last Bama coach win a national title.

I'd like to think that the good ol boys have learned there lesson from the past. They can always come back, but a ton of things have also changed since they last took power.

It's going to be tough to replace him, but at a minimum, we'll be competitive for a couple of years after he leaves, then fire the replacement after 4-5 years. At best, we keep rolling with a homerun hire, winning a 3 rings per decade. Most likely, it's somewhere in between, with is winning a ring every 10-15 years, depending on the coach.

If they don't get a guy that can recruit nationally, they are sunk. Having two powers in an average at best recruiting state means something has gotta give. After about 3 years, the Saban well, will have dried up.

The past 5 years (2016 included), the state of Alabama only averages around 12 players who are at least 4 stars and the majority of them are linebackers. In 2011 they only had seven.

They will lose possibly their entire recruiting power in the form of their assistants as well.

My educated guess, they'll get somebody decent, but he'll ride the fumes of the ridiculous talent Saban hoarded and when Bama can't finish #1 in recruiting for several years in a row, the wins will be harder to come by.

That's why I'm glad LSU is all by its lonesome in a talent rich state. We have had no less than 15 4 star or better players in 5 of the past 6 years (including 2016). We average at least 16 4 stars or better over that time frame, and have had at least 19 4 star or better players 2 of the last 3 years.


This post isn't a hate on Bama, it is just to show that national recruiting plays a big part in their class and they will lose a lot of national recruiting power once Saban and the crew leave.

As far as hiring a new coach after Coach Saban leaves, that is a hard one.

What makes it hard is that we, college football fans, don't know who the absolute best NFL coach will be when Saban retires.

We don't know who will be the best college football coach will be when he retires.

All of us will just have to wait and see when he decides to retire.

After that, Alabama will simply pick and choose among the very best there is to offer, in both the NFL and college, and give one of them a chance to attain immortality.
