That is where you are WRONG. LSU fans in the past had a much more hatred toward Auburn. Why does everyone seem to want to be LSU's rival. Could it possibly be that we been pretty darn good for the last 10 yrs or so???

I disagree...the fact that bama beat us something like 30 odd years in a row in DV made me hate them growing up. The biggest win I can remember in the 90s other then the97 Florida game was beating them finally in Tuscaloosa...we were to them like state is to us. I don't think they considered us rivals till now. And it will only stand until one of us is irrelevant for a while again. Nick saban only matters to ignorant tiger fans. That being said I look forward to this game every year. I respect and hats Alabama. I only hats ole miss lol

Anyone else remember the run in that supposedly took place between Saban at LSU and Franchione at Bama?

Yes. This was taken from rollbamaroll.com, but it is how I remember the story/rumors taking place.

quote:

All week, the Internet and all of talk radio were abuzz regarding a tirade supposedly launched into by then-LSU head coach Nick Saban, talking about how he was not going to let their SEC championship (LSU was defending SEC champion at the time) be taken away by a bunch of cheaters.

And then...

quote:

Alabama administered a physical beatdown of the Bayou Bengals, ending in a 31-0 victory that was probably the finest game Alabama had played in years. After the clock hit 0:00 and the band began to fire up Rammer Jammer, Franchione confronted Nick Saban at midfield with a fiery outburst and apparently some harsh words. No one ever really knew exactly what Franchione said -- and his actions became downright incomprehensible given what would occur in the following weeks -- but the thinking at the time was that Franchione was giving Saban a thorough browbeating for his supposed comments after the Kentucky game.

From my understanding Dennis Franchione did confront Saban after the game and was not happy. Who knows what it was actually about though.

The reason Alabama moved up to No. 1 in LSU's "hate" list, is that Ole Miss has competitively fallen off in the past decade, while the Alabama-LSU competition has been about national titles. Ole Miss is LSU's #1 traditional rival.

It's a temporary rivalry.

This right here. When you have two of the elite teams in the SEC going head to head the last 3 to 4 years it happens. Throw in Saban as well and it triples. It is only temporary, when Saban leaves and or one team drops off then it is over.

Owned" is the key word here. I wonder how old you are. If you are 40 or younger then you have no recollection of the period of time when Bama "owned" LSU.

quote:

I seriously doubt that any Bama fan that regularly posts on this board can personally remember the Bear Bryant years, because they were simply too young or not born yet.

Since 1982 Bama is 16-15-1 against LSU, is 11-11 against LSU since 1992, and 5-7 since 2002. Nobody "owns" anybody in this series since most people on this board started following football.

I really fell like their is a difference between a historical rivalry like auburn/Georgia or ohio st/Michigan and a current rival. Lets be honest bama wasn't just beating up on LSU when the Bear coached. Most teams got their arse's kicked. Its just awesome to be able to discuss the games with bama as they have been so competitive the last 10-15 years (aside from 21-0). Just say LSU and Bama are rivals competing for the SEC west pretty much every year and leave the historical stuff to the old fogies.

Ok got through the first 5 pages and no one has really given a flame-free answer so Ill give it a shot.

quote:

Before Saban ever coached in the SEC and even during the time Saban was at LSU and with the Dolphins, how intense was the hate between these two?

It wasn't. From a Bama standpoint, LSU was considered more of an ally because 1)They didn't beat Alabama often, but they still had a solid program 2)They have good fans 3)They werent Auburn or UT. We used to refer to them as the "good" Tigers. The baseball rivalry(that was a rivalry) was a good one in the 90's when Bama was still decent.

quote:

Its clearly one of the top rivalries in the SEC today and has been since Saban went to Bama + won 3 championships, but was the hate anything close to what it is now before the Saban factor was there?

Its only a rivalry because both teams are good. LSU probably considered Auburn much more of a rivalry than Bama when Shula was coaching here. You want to see hate? Just wait until UT gets good again and beats Alabama.

quote:

Part of me thinks that if Saban would have gone to any other SEC West program post-LSU and had won 3 titles, LSU fans would have that program at the top of their "hate" list.

Absolutely

These games in the last 4-5 years have been battles. Very evenly matched outside of 1/9/12 when LSU didn't show up.

frick Bama.

It doesnt matter what you label the matchup as, its the biggest game in college football year in and year out; and probably will be for the foreseeable future.
