is an achievement. Always has been, always will be for any school that has one in a season. In fact Auburn has had 8 of them in the last 6 years.
It is easy to argue that the significance of a 1000 rising season has been impacted by the addition of 2 regular season games,

So let me get this straight, Auburn finishes 8-5, gets a new DC and are now pre-season top 5 and picked to win the West. LSU finishes 8-5, gets a new DC and are now preseason top 10-15. A&M finishes 8-5, gets a new DC and are now preseason unranked.

I think that's the OP's point. There is no reason they should be ranked that high based off of last years results and what they lost/bring back.
But preseason rankings are not based just off last year. Sure last year's results are factored in. But more than that, the main factor is what the team has returning this year along with the schedule they play this year. If preseason rankings were just based off solely on last year, then every year's preseason polls would be nothing more than a carbon copy of the final polls of last year.

Your 5'10" true freshman can't throw to a WR that's suspended.
Our secondary should be pretty good this year.
Sorry pal, but the only thing Texas A&M is going to be destroying this season is Kevin Sumlin's career.
I seem to forget and maybe you can remind me... what happened last time A&M played a true freshman vs Auburn?

Makes sense since A&M and Bama both beat Auburn more often than not.

Hell, since 2001, LSU has won the West 6 times, Auburn 6 times, and Bama 5 times.
Now, how many times do you think LSU was the preseason favorite to win the West during that time span versus the other 2?

The DB (Jonathan Mincy) who was beat for 2 of these TDs is gone. Thankfully!

That would be a mighty big swing in Auburn's favor considering the average score in the series is 39-24 in favor of A&M.
