Any good answers?
Honestly? Not really. Best I can think is because the schedule is much more favorable with GA, Bama, Ole Miss, and Miss State at home.
One away game is Kentucky.
Even though the offense lost a lot, Kozan back, along with two good FB options combined with a great returning wide receiver would make it seem the offense will still be pretty good.
I think the biggest reason for optimism is the hope for the defense to improve. LAwson being back alone is huge, add in Cowart and Matthews and we may be much, much better.
Still, that is too many question marks to be the clear pre-season favorite. So maybe it is more about the questions on the other teams than it is about the strength of Auburn?

JJ is a stud!!
Even when Auburn went 3-9 they had a 1000yd rusher. Doesn't matter who is playing RB at Auburn. They are going to run the rock and run it well.
#1 WR back and other WR's will benefit from JJ. All Marshall did was throw deep for the most part.
Loads of talent in the O-line. They need to gel as a unit early, though.
Carl Lawson is back and at 100%. This should take pressure and double teams off of the interior D-linemen. Question mark on who is going to play the other end, though. How effective can Cowart be coming in as a true freshman?
With the new defensive scheme, the LB's, who are all experienced, should be able to play more downhill and instinctive.
If they can stay healthy, I would put our starting 4 DB's up against anybody else's in the conference. There is a huge drop off after the starters, though.
I wish that Auburn wasn't getting all the love they are right now. Most things other than my questions bolded above look great on paper, but they have not played a game yet nor proven anything on the field yet.

Someone has to be the favorite. The SEC West will be good to great from top to bottom. Every team is having to replace key pieces. Auburn looks good on paper, and their defense could see real improvement under Boom. Their toughest games are at home. That's why many are picking them.

Serious question....
How do you lose 5 games in a season when you start the year top 10 nowadays?

You play the schedule Auburn did last year, with the injuries Auburn had, with Ellis Johnson at D Coordinator, and lets see how you would have done.

you didn't learn how in 2000 when Bama started #3 and finished the year 3-8?

thanks to bama giving up inside the 5 yard line... up 55-0. it's hysterical you laud that 1000 yards as some sort of achievement, but little brother gonna little brother.

I was 10, so I didn't really learn much. Although I remember my dad being pretty upset haha.
I honestly don't know how it happens though.

Embellish (make shite up to make it sound better) much Gump? How could Bama be up 55-0 when the final score of the game was 49-0.
Alabama did beat Auburn once 55-0, waaaaay back in 1948. Next time you use google to try to make it seem like you know football, double check your facts. Talk about a lil bro comment.
It is an achievement. Always has been, always will be for any school that has one in a season. In fact Auburn has had 8 of them in the last 6 years.

Texas A&M will destroy Auburns secondary.

Your 5'10" true freshman can't throw to a WR that's suspended.
Our secondary should be pretty good this year.
Sorry pal, but the only thing Texas A&M is going to be destroying this season is Kevin Sumlin's career.

IF not Auburn, then who?
We may just be the best of what the SEC has coming back

Lol, Murray won't be in at qb, Allen is better than anyone in the league.
This games going to be 40 something to 40 something but I'm not predicting a winner

There are no legit ones. People are just doing their yearly moronic overrate a team or player over nothing preseason rankings. Look how high Carl Lawson is after a serious injury? People think this guy is going to come back better than ever, why?
Ok, SEC preseason aside because of other teams with faults, but why Auburn ranked in the top 5?
What will Muschamp help with their passing defense? With arguably the best corner in the country, the best freshman (true and redshirt) corner in the country, and a pass rush with Dante Fowler (5th in SEC, 36th overall), they still gave up 300 passing yards four times, and 200 passing yards 7 times in only 12 games. How much better is he going to do with Auburn's 12th in SEC sacks (98th overall), and 12th in SEC pass defense (70th overall). To add, with a bunch of average secondary players, true freshman, and their "best defensive player" coming off a serious injury?
Also, I don't buy the 1000 yard dual threat ability of Johnson. I think he's going go be a great passer, but at the very best, I'd but him at 400 yards rushing and right around 4 yards per carry. How would the change up in offensive style work in the SEC though? How much will they have ready by game three when they come to LSU?
LSU doesn't have problems with its offensive line, RBs, WRs or defense like it did last year around the time we played. We also won't have an underdeveloped QB getting his first start as a true freshman on the road against a top 10 team.
Look, I don't think they'll be bad, but top 5, and the favorite to win the SEC? I'd put Bama and UGA before them.

I'm just trying to figure out what makes this AU team different? What road leads so many to think of AU as being the top pick?
BC the SEC West winner is likely going to be top 5 and who else looks better? Bama looks to be worse and no one else looks to be much improved if any.
The only reason Auburn slid last year was defense and Muschamp is one of the best in the business. That said I wish they had us picked last and Bama number 1 in the country just like Bama fans.

Allen can't hold Johnson's jockstrap.
It's more likely that Auburn wins by 40.

Who should be the favorite?
Alabama? A team that could have easily lost 4 games last year if not for an enormous amount of luck and who loses like 9 starters on offense
LSU? A team that lose 5 games last year themselves, has huge question marks at quarterback and on their front 7 on defense, and has a defensive coordinator that not a single other team would want
Arkansas? A team that is 2-14 in conference under their current head coach
Ole Miss? A team that has never won the west, can't run the ball on offense, and has a huge question mark at quarterback
