Everyone knows when it comes to basketball and baseball, its all about the Tournament. Ask any fan this question: Would you rather have Alabama's wins in basketball, or Florida's fewer wins but much richer Tournament success? 99.999% of people are going to pick Florida's tournament success.

The truth is, outside of Kentucky and maybe Arkansas, the SEC has a very poor basketball pedigree. If you look at the NCAA Tournament history and assign points to each teams's performance, you'll find the SEC has only produced 2 programs in the Top 25 all-time.

Here's the scale:

10 points for each season in which a team gets to the NCAA Tournament
20 points for each season in which a team gets to the Sweet 16
50 points for each season in which a team gets to the Final 4
100 points for each season in which a team wins the National Title.

Here are the Top 10 programs of all-time:
1) Kentucky- 1870
2) UCLA- 1840
3) North Carolina- 1610
4) Duke- 1420
5) Kansas- 1310
6) Louisville- 1140
7) Indiana- 1100
8) Michigan State- 860
9) UConn- 850
10) Syracuse- 780

**Arkansas comes in at #16 all-time
**Florida comes in at #26 all-time
**LSU comes in at #35 all-time
**Missouri comes in at #47 all-time

No other program makes the Top 50

Here's how the SEC looks if you rank just the SEC:

1) Kentucky- 1870
2) Arkansas- 630
3) Florida- 510
4) LSU- 420
5) Missouri- 310
6) Tennessee- 270
7) Alabama- 260
8) Vanderbilt- 200
9) Texas A&M- 170
10) Mississippi State- 160
11) Georgia- 150
12) Auburn- 120
13) South Carolina- 110
14) Ole Miss- 90

Alabama's all-time performance in the NCAA Tournament ranks them in the middle-of-the-pack in the SEC. It ranks them in a 7-way tie for #60 all-time nationally.

While that's certainly better than a lot of programs in the league can claim, it is also certainly nothing to write home about. For some reason there is a myth among Alabama fans that their basketball program is right up underneath Kentucky as the #2 or #3 all-time in the SEC. This is absolutely a fantasy as there is very little evidence that supports such a claim.

As the OP suggested, one trip the the Sweet 16 during the last quarter century does not equal much success.

I dont think most bama fans claim to be successful in basketball or baseball.

When have we claimed to be successful in basketball or baseball? We are a football school first and foremost, we all know football is King at Alabama ~ always has been, always will be.

The bottom line here is that even though Alabama is a football school, the other 2 men's sports have been respectable.

The OP can't say the same.

You just wasted a whole lot of time and effort to "prove" something that no Bama fan disagrees with. The only time we ever bring up our wins in baseball and basketball is when dumbasses like the OP, who have no knowledge of SEC sports history, try to pretend we're a one trick pony and our other revenue sports have been historical bottom dwellers of the conference - which clearly isn't the case.

Based on all time wins, that would be accurate. Based on tournament success, that's obviously not the case.

Go look at post #2 in this very thread... the one I responded to. It trumpeted Bama's position in all-time SEC wins as if that has anything to do with basketball success. First of all, by counting only SEC wins it disqualifies programs like Arkansas and Missouri from the discussion... two programs that are far more successful than Alabama. Secondly, that argument values something that frankly is just not very important.

If Team A has 24 wins but doesn't make the NCAA Tournament... but Team B has 18 wins and makes the NCAA tournament, everyone regards Team B as having the better season. Wins without NCAA tournament play are pretty much worthless.

Auburn's total conference wins this school year in football and basketball is less than what Alabama's Conference wins were just in football.
And toss in the fact that Auburn is in last place in the conference in baseball.

No wonder your mind is on other schools than on Auburn.

I think that when you account for postseason success, historical regular season success, etc Alabama falls into these areas

Football - #1
Basketball - #5-8 (behind Kentucky, Florida, Arkansas, LSU; in a grouping with Tennessee, Missouri)
Baseball - #4-8 (behind Florida, LSU, South Carolina; in a grouping with Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Ole Miss)

We have been historically competitive, upper echelon in the SEC programs in basketball and baseball. We have come up just short on lots and lots of occasions in both sports which limit us from being included in the 1st tier in both.

Who said it counted only SEC wins? We rank about 33rd nationally in all time wins. All time overall wins. The only two SEC teams ahead of Alabama are Arkansas and Kentucky. It wasn't until last year that Arkansas surpassed Alabama, and still is currently only sitting with about 5 more wins all time.

Educate yourself.

Yes and you proved my point by listing all-time SEC wins as the measuring stick of success for both basketball and baseball when that means absolutely nothing. Did you not say this immediately as a response to the OP:

quote:

#1 in the conference in all time wins in Baseball

#3 in the conference in all time wins in Basketball

Only school in the SEC to be ranked in the top 3 in the conference in all time wins in all 3 major sports.

Bottomline is that Alabama has the 7th best basketball program in the SEC... and most of the programs in the bottom half are a small run of major success away from passing Bama as well. There's just not much separation between any of the programs outside of Kentucky and Arkansas.

Same goes for baseball. You immediately touted SEC wins in your rebuttal post, ignoring the fact that making the SEC Tournament and especially getting to Omaha are the true barometers of College Baseball success.

College World Series Appearances:

1) LSU- 17 (6 national titles)
2) S. Carolina- 11 (2 national titles)
3) Florida- 9
3) Mississippi State- 9
5) Arkansas- 8
6) Georgia- 6 (1 national title)
6) Missouri- 6 (1 national title)
8) Texas A&M- 5
8) Ole Miss- 5
8) Alabama- 5
11) Auburn- 4
11) Tennessee- 4
13) Vanderbilt- 3 (1 national title)
14) Kentucky- 0

So again with baseball, Alabama is certainly at best in the middle-of-the-pack, yet your immediate response to the OP tried to imply that Bama was in the Top 3.

So thanks for proving my point. Bama fans constantly do this with both baseball and basketball.
