I'll believe it when I see it. The difference with Texas is that they have an SEC West power in the same state with their ropers pushing down on their throat. Hard to get momentum like that.

This is exactly why Mack is gone and they brought in someone known for recruiting NFL talent.

He'll develop relationships.

I'm not saying aTm is fricked, but UT isn't going to just lay down and be fine with being subpar.

I agree 100%.

The point is though that the thread is about "are we concerned" and the answer is "no." He can have success, we can have success- there is enough talent in Texas to go around.

What killed us during our time in the Big 12 was two things: OU got second pick of Texas talent instead of us, and Mack Brown worked politics to make sure when we did get our pick it wasn't players we needed.

Those two situations are gone. Strong could kill it at Texas, bring in top 5 recruiting classes, and we can still bring in top 10 classes ourselves.

I would have been "concerned" if Briles would have been hired. He would have only recruited instate and would have really gone toe-to-toe for almost every recruit we wanted (same offensive style, same shite defense, etc.).

I would have been "concerned" if it would have been Saban, as simply his presence would have raised the profile of the RRR back to where it was in the 00's which would hurt our recruiting by helping OU's exposure.

But Strong simply was the best option for us short of a bad coach. So we are cool with it.

Doubtful. He may come in to Florida and get a few guys/yr, but his base of players is solid. He won't need to come to FL for good players like he did at Louisville.

Um, he is already working on backfilling this class from Florida.

A few speeches around the state and a couple of bags of cash will solve the problem.

Texas won't let him recruit SEC-style. They want clean wins, his hands are tied. They won't let him play the street agent game like Sumlin does.

My guess is he will go to all the pipeline schools first or schools that have been in the past. Make sure he mends relationships, etc. When Meyer came to UF, people said the same shite. It didn't matter, he won, and won big on the trail as well.

Texas and Florida recruiting are different animals. Texas recruiting is a whole cycle ahead of Florida. The same progress Meyer made in a year at UF will take two years at Texas.

Unless you believe like many sips do that they will flip players in this 2014 class. Then you are just setting yourself up for disappointment.

So we are going with Bama style recognition of titles?

Sweet! That means A&M has like 4 more than the 1 AP title we have!

Between Fred Akers and Mack Brown (1984-1997), A&M owned the state and Texas was wandering in the wilderness.

A&M's record vs. Texas during that time: 11-3

While Charlie Strong is a decent coach (on the defensive side), it will take an extremely massive culture change for them to gain any ground on A&M.

Let's look at the A&M commits/signees this year that Texas wanted:

WR: Frank Iheanacho
OL: Zach Ledwik
OL: Tank Davis
OL: Koda Martin
DE: Myles Garrett
DT: Zaycovan Henderson (flipped with one phone call 2 days before he was supposed to enroll there)
DT: DeShawn Washington
LB: Josh Walker
DB: Nick Harvey
DB: Armani Watts

Contrast that with the Texas commits/signees that A&M wanted:

WR: Armanti Foreman
LB: Otaro Alaka (who we might still flip)

Step 1 in Sumlin's plan: Marginalize OU in recruiting (complete in 2013)

Step 2 in Sumlin's plan: Marginalize Texas in recruiting (in progress, likely complete in 2015)

And, to be fair, they only got Foreman because they were willing to offer his brother, and we wouldn't. if we flip Alaka, it's a shut-out.

Not completely. We could really use Edwin Freeman, and all indications are that he wants to get Strong...and Hard.

I agree with Red McCombs on this issue.

Strong may make a good position coach, I am sure.

If he is planning to make up a significant portion of his class up with Florida kids, he is screwed. Texas programs need to win the state first. Then fill in the class with a few out of staters. If he concentrates on Florida, he'll likely be behind Florida and FSU in the pecking order and will fight other programs who also recruit Florida. He has to win Texas. Or else he is failing.

Not concerned.

I know they didn't play in the games, and certainly don't deserve real credit as NCs, but that stretch of 45-6 or whatever it was is enough to say that they were the other dominant Texas team.

IMO of course.

Anyways, back to the topic of Texas politics ruining any chance of Strong getting recruits.

I think you're misinterpreting the Texas politics angle.

Texas politics are not preventing Strong from getting recruits. Texas no longer has the advantage of politics keeping recruits away from A&M.

Without reading the thread (ain't nobody got time fo' dat ), lemme just say that among the myriad reasons for our SEC move, not waiting with bated breath for t.u. to hire a competent coach was a prime one. We kicked their arse before Mack in the 80s/early 90s, but one good hire by them was good enough to marginalize us because we had no brand differentiation. Now it doesn't matter as much because 1.) We don't play them, and 2.) We play in a better league that attracts better recruits on the regular.

That's why most of us were not even overly concerned if the sips had managed to lure Saban away from Bama.

They will get theres, we will get ours. They are not going to be able to do what they did to us in the 2000s
