Since Chavis left, all LSU fans can do is talk about how glad they are and how bad Chavis was.
I appreciate what Chavis did for LSU but I'm not blind to the fact he got stale here.
And his recruiting sucked arse.
I'm anxious and excited about Steele & O together AND the talent we're bringing in.

Is this you marking the 7 month anniversary?

He had the Joe Kines/Marty Shottenheimer disease. 3rd down passing situations meant send in extra DB's and rush 3. Play coverage instead of making the QB hurry with his decision. When it was obvious passing downs you could absolutely carve him up. In 2012, having seen Chavis for years, I knew Bama would scoot down the field on LSU with little resistance.

I don't know why Chief has never considered that perhaps the Mustang defense just doesn't work.
Because Mike Hamilton gave Fulmer that '8 is Enough' contract. Chavis and Fulmer knew 8 wins gets a raise and an extension.
There was no incentive to win the big ones. The checks came rolling with Vandy and UK wins.

You realize this guy is saying that Myles Garrett trying to sack the QB means he isn't "playing contain" where as at LSU that's what Chavis had his lineman do... Not rush the QB... "Contain".
I used to think gumps were the worst posters on this board but at least y'all understand basic principles of the game.

It's comedy that there is still debate about 3rd and Chavis.
It's real. Get some really good DBs and the Mustang can work. Just be up by more than 7 late in the 4th on D.

I watched the Tennessee defenses dominate teams for 3 1/2 quarters, and then look like a Sunseri defense when the game was on the line. I watched this happen, many times.

^ This guy gets it. ^

For not caring about A&M and Chavis anymore there sure are a lot debates about it.
Should we debate about the Chavis case being moved to Louisiana again? I mean ya'll were so sure that was gonna' happen.

Chavis' Defensive Tackles occupy blockers so that his LB can make the plays. He doesn't send a lot of pressure but fakes it a ton. He does zone blitz a bit. His pass rushers on one side typically line up off the LOS up to 1 yard in some cases. Sam Montgomery did this after 2011 and then ran read-and-react off the snap to try and find run/pass and play contain. Rasco did this exceptionally well and for his size he set the edge well.
The trade off is that pass-rushing is totally nullified. Negative plays from sacks and picks were much lower than other, similarly-ranked defenses.
The OP is saying that TAMU fans fundamentally misunderstand Chavis' style of defense, which is definitely not to attack. It's gap control at the line, stopping the run with numbers and the pass with speed in the Secondary.
The Chavis defense will rarely if ever give up the big play. It puts pressure on an offense to execute and string drives and plays together in order to put points on the board, and it does a good job in the scoring zone/red zone. You won't give up an 80-yard TD unless its an 87-yard-TD-drive that took 9 plays.
Pass Rushing and gap shooting at the line-hallmarks of defenses with high TFL and Sack totals-are not priorities and you won't see them as much as other highly ranked defense do.
Just my $0.02. I'm glad we hired him, I loved his results, but he cost us some victories late in games. It could be argued his defenses kept us in more wins than they did cost us losses, but the L's stood out to me in a major way.

What if I told you that you can "attack" the point of contact, and that sometimes it makes all the difference in the world?

This is 1 thing I hate about our fans.. The complete absence of rationality. They would have laughed anyone out of the room who didn't think Chavis was the best coordinator in the SEC when he was at LSU. Now they act like he's magically a subpar DC and that Steele is an upgrade.
Did you fall asleep for half the season? After every loss and especially the last second Bama meltdown there were multiple threads on the scoreboard calling for Chavis to be fired. Stop trying to be an anti-homer just to impress the class.

I was at both bama games, 2012 and 14. It was time for him to go. And his recruiting sucked.

Chavis is a very good DC, but he has some major faults in his scheme that get exploited at critical points in the game.
aTm fans are glad to have him because he's an obvious improvement from what they had. Some LSU fans, myself included, weren't devastated to see him go because of the notable late game collapses. There are several UT fans here that will tell you something similar in regards to him leaving.
Kevin Steele is a step, or two, down from Chavis, but I'm eager to see what he can do with the talent LSU has, and the ridiculously good coaching staff that he has around him. If he falls flat on his face, then he and Miles will both be gone in 3 years. If not, LSU will be in the same position it's been since Miles got here, in the hunt for the West almost every season.
