Could Anthony Grant be the next head coach at Minnesota?

If the report is true, coaches at the top of the search list would include Shaka Smart and Anthony Grant — both of whom worked for Teague at VCU. Smart is still the coach at VCU, while Grant is the head coach now at Alabama.

It is being reported that Minnesota has fired Tubby Smith a day after being eliminated from the NCAA Tournamnet. According to this link it appears that Anthony Grant may be on their short list of replacements. Do you think he would go?

If he did, who would you like to hire as his replacement?

I don't see him going anywhere.

If Grant is hired away, we should go after Bruce Pearl.

Firing Tubby was really fricking stupid on their part. He's a crappy recruiter but he knows his Xs and Os pretty well. It's fricking Minnesota. Given their conference, they should be happy just making the field half the time and winning a game or two every few years.

If Grant bolts we need to pay Gregg Marshall.

Ben Howland
Bruce Pearl
Steve Prohm

Personally, I think Grant will stay. I truly believe he wants to build a similar program to that of Florida and his mentor, Donovan. If a new arena were built I think it would help either Grant or a new coach.

Tubby had an awful conference record so that was the main reason I think.

He's a good coach, but damn I hate him. I'd get used to him if that ever happened though.

I'm just a little confused as to why they would fire Tubby for CAG other than the prior relationship with Teague. IMO what Tubby has accomplished at Minnesota is slightly more impressive than what CAG has done at Bama.

Whether or not CAG would accept it IDK. I view Minnesota as being similar to Alabama in that it has a decent basketball history but is currently a tier 2 job at best for a bball coach. It's definitely a step up in terms of conference and probably has better fan support.

Grant already was built an awesome practice facility like was promised. It'd be counter productive to have built a great facility and made lots of upgrades to Coleman and then tear it down.

I just don't see CAG having a better conference record coaching in the B1G

totally agree, I just think the university hurt themselves by improving instead of rebuilding.

Marshall I guess. Not sure I think he'd come though.

Pearl will most likely end up taking a job at a small school to work his way back up. I would be beyond shocked if he was even a serious candidate.

I guess Enfield will be the hottest name.

I don't care for him either, but he'd be the best guy we could reasonably expect to hire IMO. Howland can do better and Pearl is still show caused. The FGCU coach is going to be a hot name now, but that will be a big gamble for whoever hires him.

Another reason I don't think Grant would leave is that Minnesota is having to pay a large buyout to Tubby, so I don't think they'd have a lot of money to buyout Grant from Bama and then give him a lucrative contract. Plus, Grant's name gets floated each year, but he hasn't accomplished anything at Bama. He must have a good agent.

I don't see Grant leaving for Minnesota. That would be a lateral move at best.

I hope we wouldn't go down that road.

Not to shite on our job, but I'm not totally sure why Marshall would leave Wichita for us, unless we just offer him a legit raise (I don't know what they're paying him).

At the same time I don't feel like Minnesota's some sort of clear step-up from here either by any means.

Not worth the risk. In the scenario that Grant did leave, I'd hope we wouldn't go after Prohm either.

Still has another year on his show-cause, correct? I really doubt Grant goes to Minnesota if offered, and I'd imagine Shaka would have to say no to them first anyway.

We would need someone with some recruiting ties to the South.

FIFY. I think it's adorable that they think they can hire Shaka Smart who turned down the Illinois job and is getting looked at for the UCLA job. I don't care if the AD and him are the bestest of butt-buddies, I don't see that happening. I'd like to know what in the hell they were thinking when they fired Tubby Smith. He's done a very solid job at Minnesota.

BTW Marshall would be the best option I could see us realistically landing if Grant left (I don't see it happening), but he had the 2 million dollar price tag, BEFORE this Sweet 16 run. It will depend on how much money we are willing to dish out to a first year coach.
