You all are not alone. If the weather people in B'ham dropped the ball, then the city of Chattanooga totally shite the bed.

The high today was 19 degrees. The weather people gave an update around 4 stating that there would be little or no accumulation; by then it was already an inch of packed ice on the roads.

No salt or sand trucks to be found. Schools closed at 11am but buses could not go up the hills to get to the schools. Policeman in the lane next to mine watching the cars spin and slide across the road just like I was.

I live about 15 miles from where I work. It took me 5 1/2 hours to get home.

Just talked to my uncle again. EMA is actually using him as an official runner now. He is one the only ones able to get around. He is going window to window knocking on cars parked on the interstate looking for the elderly. They have a much harder time keeping warm.

I would be doing it to if I could get down there but I am stuck where I live. So many cars blocking the roads.

Left downtown at 2:30. Got home at 9:00. Had to leave my car about 1/2 mile away. This entire day can kiss my arse

I have a 9 month old, and if it hadn't been for the fellow that helped us, I don't know what we would have done. The state troopers are seen almost daily on 20/59 writing tickets, but funny thing, I didn't see a god damn one on the way home this day. The good citizens like your uncle are the only ones who were there to help, and by god it meant a lot to me and my wife.

At least y'all made it home safely. This was my first snow experience in the south. Crazy.

Yep, we have a 5 month old and if it weren't for an awesome stranger with a 4wd truck we would have had to walk 3 miles from my truck to our house.

My next truck/SUV will have 4wd.

I'm right there with you.

A total clusterfrick of ineptitude was shown across this state today. Ever since we got burned a couple of years ago with the snow scares which never came to fruition the educational adminstrators have been afraid to cancel classes. Well, wake up assholes, this is why it's better to err on the side of caution. And to anyone who says this is an overreaction - thousands of people risked their lives on the roads today because the decision makers didn't want to look stupid. Well, now you look really fricking stupid. Oh yeah, I mad.

FWD is just as effective is the snow. It's about knowing how to drive and the tires. You need tires with wide siping. They make all around tires for cars that are excellent in the snow, just check the siping. The best snow driving car I have owned was a 2006 Honda Accord. I had to work to get that thing loose in the snow. Fantastic car but the tires made a huge difference.

Either way my rear wheel drive truck just doesn't cut it.

I've never experienced anything like this in my life. It was like a scene from a disaster movie. The city was completely unprepared for the volume of people on the road

I remember the one time it snowed when I lived in Atlanta. It only snowed like one inch and my office closed in a panic as soon as it started falling.

It makes you appreciate the infrastructure here in Missouri that is used to handling the snow and ice. We had about 7 inches of snow in one night a few weeks back and I still had to go to work the next day.

When I was in Ohio they used a liquid pretreatment on the roads. Stayed on the road for days and melted everything before it could freeze. Would be much easier to work with than salt and also doesn't destroy vehicles and roads.

Should at the least should have planned a delay. This all started around 11. But they knew a hr or two before that things had changed and we were going to get blasted. Could have cancelled school before the delay ended and this wouldn't have happened. Incredible stupidity on the part of leadership.

Whats kinda weird is where the different accumulations happened. Oneonta got 4 inches,i Ashville got 3, but Anniston got less than an inch.

My kids made it home. My wife didn't, but at least she found a shelter. I'm in Texas, and there's nothing I could do to help.

Unfortunately, my elderly mother is stranded without her insulin.

They're just not prepared for it here because it happens rarely. But back in Columbia, the only time I saw anything close to this level of fubar, we had 18" of snow in about 12 hours, thundersnow, major drifting and below 10 degree temps. And they still didn't call out the national guard.

Honestly, I'm not sure they'd get the trucks out in Columbia for the amount of snow they had here today. But people aren't familiar with it, and they panicked. Tens of thousands of people hit the roads at the same time. Hundreds, if not thousands, of wrecks. Police stopped responding unless there were injuries. Buses couldn't get to schools, and neither could parents. Which further fed the panic.

The elderly and those with medical conditions have 1st priority right now. Have you called EMA? Try 211 and they should be able to locate help based on her area

Yeah snow is no bueno unless you're around it a lot. The highway departments in Alabama and Georgia aren't going to pay for the necessary equipment for something that rarely happens. Like I said, in the 4 years I lived in Atlanta it snowed one time for a grand total of about 1 inch. It doesn't surprise me at all that they weren't prepared today and of course the general population suffers for it.

On the other hand, like you were saying, in the past month or so here in Springfield we've had around 17 inches of snow I believe and I have yet to miss a day of work because of it. MDot is absurdly efficient when it comes to getting the road cleared. Them and the good ole boys that attach the plows to their trucks for the fun of it.

Same here. Never seen utter chaos like today. I normally have a very short temper but not really got upset today just because there was so much to take in and going on. It was a very frustrating day though, and who knows what tomorrow will be like

Those good ole boys would have had some fun and made some money today, for sure. Every Missouri redneck with 4wd and a blade would have been on the roads!

Friend of mine has been walking around Vestavia Hills. Counted 196 abandoned cars in a 4 lane 1 mile stretch of road. It's insane. I20 is a parking lot, all the back roads are as well. Literally thousands of people are stranded. It's insane. I can't imagine what the big hill heading out to chelsea on 280 was like.
