I'm gonna get some chains for mine. Use em once and they will pay for themselves.

Bham got 19 inche from the 93 storm and shut down with no power in alot ofplaces for a week. Like you, most here are in hilly areas. Its the ice that is killing today, notsnow. Number one issue though, imo, is everyone relied on tv personalities instead of realizing the ground has been freeing at nights before this. And people are to busy to stop and be safe. Closing or getting off at 10 am would have prevented a ton of this mess.

This situation did make me question whether there is an evacuation plan for the city, state ect because essentially that was what we saw yesterday, a mass evacuation

thats what i took away from it. there seemed to be no plan whatsoever from city, county and law enforcement. no coordination with the schools regarding closures and no general idea how to force the flow of the traffic to prevent people from being stranded. it was fairly disturbing.

ETA: i am speaking strictly to the logistical failures from yesterday, not the weather reporting.

Yes, I understand that it's ice not snow and I'm not criticizing at all. I hope it didn't sound that way. I'm saying that storm was so bad for us that we changed our entire Emergency Response Plans and Preparation system over it. We had nothing really but the typical southern 'stay inside if there's even a chance of snow' management plan and when we couldn't wait it out and were so devastated by it - things got massively overhauled, equipment got bought, and protocol got changed. We knew that storm was coming but we simply had no way of dealing with the aftermath but it was such a bad aftermath that we have better prep. now. Maybe B'ham and Atl city management/state/local etc. will do the same after this one.

Do you have a NWS near you? We are fortunate that there's a National Weather Service in Morristown which is less than hour from Ktown/Gburg/Pforge and a bunch of other places. All the weather alerts our forecasters receive are coming from less than 60 miles away and even then our forecasters still miss on occasion because our weather is so weird in general.

This one we had roads prepped in Ktown, although we got lots of snow/ice the main roads are faring a lot better than B'ham and Atl.

Even today, there was no plan to redirect the flow of traffic to clear the road. People we just expected to be patient and let nature take its course

Also, this made me giggle for some reason. Can you imagine he snowed in with Mike Slive

Knoxville also is a much smaller city with a more compact population. Atlanta and the suburbs have over a hundred miles just of interstate roadway that covers close to 10 counties. Factor in the major non interstates and I would bet there are between 250 and 500 miles of major highways that would need to be pre-treated/salted/cleared.

My mom lives in town and said that the trucks were actually staged not far from her to deal with some of the intown streets Monday afternoon, but the timing changed so quickly that the roads deteriorated before the crews were in place to man the trucks.

Well, most of the roads were officially closed today and they were asking people to stay off the roads. Police had more pressing matters than directing traffic. A lot of citizens were out directing traffic on the side streets on my way home this afternoon.

But there were still massive amounts of people stranded on I20/Pell City and 65S Bound. Just seems like there would have been some benefit to redirecting traffic in those areas in a effort to get people home and clear the roads

The question I have is at 8:50 I looked out our window on campus and saw snow sticking on the roads and started telling people we needed to get out. I'm no meteorologist but at 9am it was clear Tuscaloosa was going to be iced over by lunch and it took them two hours to cancel school/work and release all commuter traffic at the same time.

Shouldn't some meteorologist have caught this around 4-6 am the storm didn't just jump 70 miles north at 9 am. The first wreck due to icy conditions I heard about happened before 10 am so I went ahead and left for the day. What a difference an hour can make in that situation.

James Spann issues a formal apology on his weather blog. He tells people to blame him and not city or school officials for yesterday's debacle.

James Spann is way above this, but he could have any 30+ year old woman in Alabama, even if the forecast was woefully off.

Spann should apologize every day for the rest of the year. That smug a-hole was calling some people idiots on Monday night that wanted schools closed on Tuesday. I'm fine with a meteorologist missing a forecast, it happens. But get off your Holier than thou soapbox and lose the god complex.

Too many people love the guy.
Now, we're stuck. the next remote chances of snow, every school system in the state will preemptively shut down for the foreseeable future. Then you'll have thousands of pissed off parents scrambling to take care of their kids on sunny and 45 degree days. Not to mention, we'll have so many of these cry wolf days, the kids will have to make up school on Saturdays, etc. Enter angry parents again. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

That's actually very well written. He takes complete ownership of the mess.

There may be others, but he's the first one I've seen own it. I've seen several others deflecting blame...

Also, a great big thank you needs to be sent out to all the public works employees around the state.

These folks have families and the same concerns as all the rest of us and they're also typically the lowest paid on the roster but they've been out busting their asses all week.

Just to give people elsewhere an idea of how icy the roads are, here is a video of people ice skating through the streets
