I'm not a fan of the precedent that it sets, but the situation is a unique one.
First off he attached one of the all time greats and most beloved players in Magic Johnson to issue, which forced the story to grow to where it is unavoidable.
You have a commissioner that has been on the job for less than 6 months.
Plus Sterling has very racist track record that goes back to housing discrimination, the Elgin Baylor case, and......... they had a black history month celebration in MARCH.

Is there any legal recourse the owner could take against his girlfriend, or whoever it was that made and released recording without his knowledge?
Not that he would have any money to get from her or anything like that, I am just curious if what she did was legal.

Is it illegal to record someone without thier knowledge?
Police do it all the time.
Police do it all the time.

If you are banned for life, what legally makes you pay the $2.5 mil fine?
So he has the ability to sell the team for billions of dollars once forced out by the owners or if he isn't forced out then he will still be able to make money off the team.

for sure.

But, allegedly in private, not publicly, unless I'm mistaken.

Absolutely, the guy is a racist and deserves public condemnation. However, did they use this as part of their reasoning, or did they only use the privately recorded discussions?

frick this shite, and frick whoever that new commissioner is.
The guy is a giant piece of shite. We all know that. Scrap that, we all knew that over 10 years ago, but no one gave a frick. Now it's a big deal?
This is a terrible ruling IMO. I've said this before, fine him, suspend him, do whatever you want like that, but banned for life?
"I will do everything in my power to make him sell his team."
That's wayyyy overboard.

ok, is it illegal for a private citizens to record private conversations and then release them to press/general public without the speakers knowledge or consent?

What if, being as rich as he is, he decides to say frick it, and just starts forfeiting games and refuses to allow his team to play?
Posted on 4/29/14 at 2:48 pm to RTR America
Can he sell the team without paying the fine or would the NBA transfer the fine to whoever bought the team? I can see that turning away potential buyers until he pays it.

Then why didn't the NBA do something about it then? I fricking hate Bomani Jones, but yesterday he basically was laughing at the NBA because of this. He wrote a huge piece over 7 years ago about him and had more hits on that story yesterday then he did a year after he wrote it.

it likely isn't a huge percentage of what the sales price would be.

I think it depends on the state.

It brought a lot of light to those issues that I and others were unaware of in the past.
It was likely used to help persuade the NBA into making this decision.
You likely have a much larger crisis on your hands if the punishment was a severe. The NBA is finally on the precipice of reaching what they once had ratings wise when MJ was in the league that a large negative reaction by the players could have been devastating.
Plus the league has a new collective bargaining agreement coming up and will be the first of Silver's tenure. He needs to have the NBPA on his side to avoid another lockout/strike.

gotcha. I'm admittedly ignorant on the NBA and basketball in general.

A 2.5 million dollar fine is just a drop in the bucket for a guy like Sterling or anyone looking to purchase the team.
Suiters have already priced the franchise at 1 billion dollars and that is low because of the situation.

quote:Because he is being expelled from the group because of his remarks. He's not being tolerated and his opinions aren't being tolerated.
Why is that ironic?
I hate it when people say they support tolerance and inclusion because that isn't true; they support selective tolerance and selective inclusion based upon their predefined standard of what is and is not acceptable for toleration. Everyone does this; some people just like to lord their moral superiority over others through the buzzword of tolerance and condemn others for their lack of tolerance while in reality, the only difference is in the individual's standard of what is and isn't tolerable.
quote:I think we should tolerate people's opinions and beliefs even if we disagree with them or are offended by them. Tolerance doesn't mean agreement.
You're not one of those that thinks we should be tolerant of racism are you?
