Maybe it is the relative poverty in Mississippi that makes wealth so impressive.

Maybe.

Arkansas sure is a super wealthy state though.

Poverty rates in America:

50th - Mississippi
49th - Louisiana
47th - Alabama
46th - Texas
45th - Arkansas

I'm not saying there aren't some wealthy kids at Ole Miss, in fact, I know for a fact there are. Just as there are at any SEC school, but I don't think it measures up with SMU.

There were kids I knew in Tuscaloosa whose families had planes and yachts and houses across the country, but I don't think for a second that Alabama measures up with UNC or UVA as far as wealth of students goes

NW Arkansas is one of the quickest growing business hubs in the US. The rest of the state drags it down.

We have several actual legacy billionaires in the greek system at Arkansas. It just isn't this "oh my god suck the rich ppls dicks" culture here.

U of A is in a region that has three homegrown Fortune 500s, including the global Fortune #1. There's plenty of wealth here, both cash and tucked away in grandparents portfolios. It isn't so unheard of to be special or praise worthy.

Besides, real money isn't going to a fricking mediocre state school in most instances, anyway. Aspirational middle class frickwads from southern burbs or small towns who are "small town rich" often like to continue feeling special, so arrange to go somewhere that they are still considered "rich". Ole Miss has a lot of those types, for sure.

I agree with all of this.

I am pissed at myself for continuing this thread, especially since I seriously don't care. Too much coffee and too much urge to procrastinate at work I guess.

Fred Smith went to Yale and the only reason one of his sons went to Memphis State is because he fricked up so badly everywhere else that he didn't have any other options.

The people and culture.

That's what I meant. Rich kid culture, super fratty, with daddy's money.

I actually lived Highland Park-adjcent for a few years. The OM delusion is something to behold, isn't it?

I guess. SMU kids are much wealthier and there's a ton from Chicago, Connecticut and California. It doesn't have the southern culture feel at all that OM has because it's in a big city and the student body is from all over the US.

I agree except for the Southern thing. Its certainly not as southern as Ole Miss, but it definitely has a southern greek feel to it.

FTR, I toured SMU and thought about attending there and had a couple friends who went there and partied a few times there in college. The two scenes of people would certainly blend in. That was my point.

It depends on what scene of people, there's a couple fraternities that are seemingly all Houston and Dallas kids so there is definitely crossover there because OM has plenty of kids from those areas. Overall SMU just pulls from a wider and different area geographically than OM IMO. I see OM as being kids from all over the southeast plus Houston and Dallas. I don't remember meeting anyone from Atlanta or Nashville or anything the several times I visited friends at SMU.

My friends would always complain about the kids who would come from Connecticut or California and live the hokey Dallas and TX stereotype lifestyle

Yeah, that's total bullshite.

He left Miami because he didn't want to ride the bench for 4 years. He's a really good dude.

Alice's primary residence is in Texas, at least partially for tax reasons. She keeps a home in Bentonville, and of course, her museum is there.

She attended a small private school somewhere. She still calls the hogs.

Didn't he get popped for ecstacy or something? Not saying that makes him a bad person, just saying I thought he got in some legal trouble that limited his college options.

Also, everyone I know from Memphis (a lot at Ole Miss) that has known Cannon has not liked the guy. Wasn't there some drama on the football team about him sucking but still starting because of who he was?

I don't know the guy, so I have no idea if this shite is true. Feel free to set me straight.
