It's not like it's still real present. It's in the MS state flag, and flies at the SC capitol, but other than that where else do you see it? It kinda died out a while ago. Despite what people think it DOES have major ties to the nation's history and absolutely should be in museums, learning exhibits, etc. But it's not like it's currently prominent anywhere I can think of besides those 2 examples.

Two too many.

Heard earlier an SC legislator intends to intro legislation for next year to have it removed. Good riddance.

I have never read a more eloquently worded line of BS.

The North tries to destroy the Southern economy by eliminating slave labor in the South only (slavery was still legal in the North), Southern states secede from the union (which wasn't deemed illegal until after the Civil War) to protect State Rights....and the South was promoting inequality and belligerence?

I guess, as they say, history is written by the victors.

You just convinced me that the Confederate Flag needs to go.

Good lord.

The flag doesn't foster crazy. That would be like saying we should get rid of the Stars and Stripes because of negative things that have been done in the name of the US. While everyone is bitching about racism in this case, they're overwhelmingly overlooking the very real issue of addressing mental illness in this country.

Um, I'm a tried a true southerner but you need to recognize one simple fact.

Just like Han in Star Wars, we shot first (in fact, we shot first TWICE. Once before Lincoln even took office).

Nobody can say with certainty how the attempt to secede would have played out if we hadn't gotten all shooty.

good point

I prefer this one for displaying my Southern pride. Much less inflammatory. Most dumbfricks think its the Puerto Rican or Texas flag.

I fully understand this fact. A Union officer occupied Fort Sumter in December of 1860. South Carolina's Governor (Francis Pickens) demanded they leave...he was ignored. January-April 1861 they attempted to get the union forces to leave peacefully...they refused.

Trust me, I know who shot first.

This. Outside of a part of Mississippi's state flag, where is it flown in an official capacity?

Flown on the capitol grounds of Alabama and South Carolina. In the seal of the City of Mobile.

Ummmm, no. by the late 1850's the northern states had one by one abolished slavery over a 15 year period.

"The Civil War started because of uncompromising differences between the free and slave states over the power of the national government to prohibit slavery in the territories that had not yet become states. When Abraham Lincoln won election in 1860 as the first Republican president on a platform pledging to keep slavery out of the territories, seven slave states in the deep South seceded and formed a new nation, the Confederate States of America."

This is incorrect. The Emancipation Proclamation only applied to Southern states because they were in rebellion. The 13, 14, 15 amendments were all passed within four years of the end of war and they applied to all states.

the seceded because they wanted to keep slavery. If you want to label the ability to keep slaves "states rights" it still doesn't change why they seceded.

Didn't know about Mobile. I haven't paid attention to any city seal bit as to the State Capitol, there's a small one at one of the historic statues off to the side along with several other historic flags of the era. It is very hard to spot unless you're looking for it.

Otherwise, the flag is not flown above the capitol or any other state building, nor is it flown in the walk of flags. It isn't even flown at the first white house of the confederacy. It disappeared from any type of formal prominent display decades ago and I completely and fully agree it has absolutely no place at all in that type of role or display.

If, on the other hand, you're talking about removing it completely from even historically accurate displays then just tell me what other parts of history you'd like to erase because it is uncomfortable. There are probably quite a few native Americans that would like to see some Buffalo soldier monuments come down and they'd probably also like to see Andrew Jackson disappear from the $20 bill.

Confederate forces fired on Union forces well before April, 1861.

No, I have southern pride, and it's an awesome looking flag. I don't hang it on my car, outside of my house, or wear it on my clothes. I don't want "the south to rise again" or secede from the rest of the country. I just like the flag. It's full of history and culture. Nothing wrong with liking the confederate flag.

Ok my first post was sarcasm

This one isn't

It's a fricking flag, get over it, some people use it as a symbol of hate and some as a symbol of our past, what you have is a problem with people not the flag itself but of what a certain segment of people use the flag to represent. Absurd comparison alert let's get rid of cotton, bbq, whips, and sprituals because they all represent slavery.

I don't flag that flag but there are places where it's appropriate.

State flags inspired by Confederate flags:
Alabama

Florida

Georgia

Mississippi

And the first confederate flag also flies in Austin, TX.

"Heritage not hate" is always a funny retort that rednecks use.

The heritage IS hate.

The American flag has more hate and violence associated with it than the confederate flag.

It's a fricking flag. A piece of cloth. Stop putting so much importance into it.
