That's a very naive and idealistic view.

I don't think so. I think if you have one ounce of humanity you would not be able to get up and go to work every day as a labor camp guard or a Jew hunter.

It's amazing what a little bit of conditioning can do the human psyche. It wasn't long ago that our forefathers had similar inhumane approaches to Africans and Indians.

I think comparing the holocaust to the institution of slavery is a specious argument. They're not even remotely the same thing.

ETA: Maybe the slaughter of Indians is similar, I'll give you that.

is that too much for being involved in the death of millions of Jews?

Is it really going to make anyone feel better to toss an apologetic 93 year old man into prison? If so, then go for it. I'm just assuming not.

Debatable

Hitler became chief of propaganda for the party in early 1920. In February 1920 he engineered the name change of the DAP to the Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei – NSDAP (National Socialist German Workers' Party), commonly known to the rest of the world as the Nazi Party.
quote:

An unprecedented amount of money was thrown behind the campaign. Well over one million pamphlets were produced and distributed; sixty trucks were commandeered for use in Berlin alone. In areas where NSDAP campaigning was less rigorous, the total was as low as 9%. The Great Depression was also a factor in Hitler's electoral success. Against this legal backdrop, the SA began its first major anti-Jewish action on 13 October 1930 when groups of brownshirts smashed the windows of Jewish-owned stores at Potsdamer Platz.[34]

That's ten years at least to leave as the nazi party was developing

What is the statute of limitations on 6 million murders anyway?

But there were plenty of people who got Jews out of Germany and hid Jews. And there were plenty who resisted the government or worked against Hitler. So there wasn't a universal delusion.

I agree it's not as easy a choice for them as it is for us typing on the internet. But it's hard to look at someone who saw genocide and was troubled by it and so he left and feel a lot of compassion. Better to have left than stayed. But there are more options that that, IMO.

I'm not saying they're the same but I am saying that the views that slaveholders and the Nazis had toward Blacks and Jews respectively weren't that different. They both, through societal conditioning, were happy to accept the idea that a group of humans were not actually fully human.

I don't think you can equate the "average southern solider" to a German who volunteers for the SS in 1941.

But maybe you can. All I know is my grandpa used to say his unit would kill SS prisoners if they caught them. He saw first hand the atrocities of a German Death camp.

In Germany? frick if I know. Chile let's you off for being a serial killer after 20 years and Peru let's you raise a full on family in their prisons, so who knows where Germany stands on that issue.

The decision is made a lot easier when your own neck is on the line, or your mother and father's neck are on the line.

So easy for me. Even if I was kidnapped now by the cartels I'd work for 'em before I volunteered to be principled and get my head cut off on Youtube.

Yes, it would make me feel better knowing he has to suffer less than the Jews did for a couple of years for assisting at Auschwitz
