Talk is heating up that 2013 QB prospect (Rivals 4* and 7th prostyle, 247sports 4* and 3rd prostyle QB) Christian Hackenberg is thinking of de-committing from PSU and has USC as his favorite IF we'll accept him (they were a favorite early in the process, and Spurrier recruited his Dad when at Duke).

AT one time we were looking to possibly take 2 QBs on our board. We had others such as Eddie Printz (early on), Boeing Brown (not so high up and he was hot for us more than we were for him), Riley Ferguson, Kevin Olson, and of course Connor Mitch.

Most of the other QBs were not so interested in coming in with a 2nd QB, and I'm not sure how Mitch felt about it. In any regards, the others went elsewhere, Mitch committed with us, and our recruitment for other QBs dried up. Now Hackenberg is back in play. I'm not sure if we're now satisfied with only Mitch, or if there's still a chance we take 2. I think Mitch was happy he was our only pledge at QB.

Both are similar style QBs with similar measurables, that are both highly regarded. Connor has been a recruiting workhorse for us trying to get other top prospects to join us. IMO we stay put with him, and wish Christian the best of luck....

Just noticed that USCe has 7 LBs committed. I know you have tight numbers. Are y'all hurting that bad at the position?

Instead of a typical 4-3-4 base defense, USC plays a 4-2-5 base where the "SAM" LB spot is converted into a hybrid LB/S spot we call the "SPUR" position: he plays either LB or safety depending on the situation. So we only have 2 traditional LB spots (WILL and MIKE)...

USC's 2-deep at LB (4 players) are all seniors for this season: Shaq Wilson, Reggie Bowens, Quin Smith, and Damario Jeffery. So while this makes our LB position a strength IMO for our defense this year, there will be substantial turnover at the position for 2013.

After those guys USC have two RS Fr. in Cedric Cooper who we are excited about and Mason Harris, and that's about it. Hopefully those 2 guys (esp. Cooper) get some snaps this season, because they will be the veterans at the position in '13...

We will also be losing DeVonte Holloman who's the projected starter at Spur this season, so we'll also be needing to replenish depth there as well.

We have true freshman and 247sports 4* (2012 class) Kaiwan Lewis who will be showing what he has this fall (hopefully he's RS-d). He will be a LB for us.

For the '13 class, we have JUCO Brandon Golson: we originally recruited him and stayed with him because although he's raw, his athleticism is freakish and his potential is out the roof. However there's been conflicting reports recently of Golson visiting other schools (like TAMU) and stating that he's not all that committed to USC right now. When local recruiting insiders interviewed him, he says he's still strong w/us. So there's a bit of drama there....

David Johnson was recruited as and will be a DE for us. He's already 250-260 lbs. Gerald Turner is also a larger LB of 240-250 lbs, and has been talked to about playing a role similar to past Gamecock great Eric Norwood, who played a OLB/DE hybrid role where in situations he played with his hand on the ground. Turner has played a lot of DE at Goose Creek, and had 9 sacks as a sophomore last season...

Mohamed Camara was recruited strictly as a Spur. As far as I know, Larenz Bryant, Matt Rolin, Kight Dallas and Golson were recruited primarily as LBs. That's 4 replacing the 4 leaving after '12. Camara is replacing Holloman. Johnson and Turner will help add depth to the DE position which we need.

So it's basically working out, just from all sorts of angles, lol...

Other USC prospects of interest that are "watchlist" prospects for commitments:

OLB Matt Rolin (4*, 94 grade) IMO our top prospect left on our board
OLB Larenz Bryant (4*, 94 grade) we will take both
WR Mike Williams (4*, 90)
WR Pharoh Cooper (3*, 83) we are recruiting him as a DB
WR Corey Cooper (3*, 87) expected to commit sometime in July

We have our Showcase Camp in July, so I expect to have a few more announcements then. Was really surprised to hear of the recent commits today...

Well, of the above prospects, Bryant, Rolin, and Pharoah Cooper have committed, Corey Cooper WOULD commit if he had an offer USC would accept right now. Williams is sort of a surprise now, turning to a lean to Clemson that is being called fairly solid. He's expected to make his announcement on tomorrow.

Williams is a solid, taller receiver that's not all-world, but still a solid 4* by most recruiting sites. He's similar to last year's Quinshad Davis, who waited too long to commit and was left out in the end, even though he had USC as a favorite (a 4*, Davis ultimately signed with UNC).

Difference is, we were taking 3 WRs in last year's cycle, and Davis was the 4th-man out. We would like to take 2 WR this class, but have yet to get pledges from our top prospects on the board. Looks like we will miss out on the top in-state WRs in Terry and Williams, and there's really no others at the position. So we'll have to try to pull in 1 or 2 from OOS, or wait for next year's class to do better.

This cycle's class is a solid top-20 to 15 class for us thus far, but we've had disappointing results for the WR and DT positions, where we aren't necessarily HURTING, but would've liked to bring in 1-2 for each position to keep from having a void in our depth charts.

Maybe Corey Cooper is looking better for us now. We'll see how it goes from here....

Rivals 4*/#4 RB and 247Sports 4* (95 grade) and #7 RB Greg Bryant has de-committed from Oklahoma and has USC and AU as his top 2 choices. AU is also hotly recruiting top RB prospect Derrick Greene. I'm hoping that AU gets Greene and that turns Bryant our way. I think both schools would be happy with that...

I don't think Auburn gets Green, but still it sounds to me like USCe Bryant is in great shape to get Bryant.

I had read where we were backing off of Langley after JUCO DB Ronnie Martin cemented his commitment to USC, and Langley was turning towards UT as his next SEC option....but Ward loves the bigger, more physical CBs. Nice addition!

Well lets hope this commit sticks.

Hadn't been around the internet for a couple days so I'm a little late but glad to hear about that. I believe that makes 20/25.. I hear we're still running low on the DL commits though?

Yep, especially after '12 DT commit (our lone DT in that class) Carlos Hood didn't make it in, and has to go the JUCO route. IMO we won't continue to recruit him.

We needed anywhere from 1-2 true DT type prospects in this class, IMO. Last year's class was OK without any as we brought in a truckload of DL in the '11 class (DTs were Quarles, Green, Dukes, Dixon Jr. with Dixon possibly growing into a DT). Add in Surratt who RS'd from the '10 class, and we're stacked at the position.

But we don't want a 2-cycle hole in the recruiting for that position, or we'll end up having a season where a big graduating DT class will leave us thin in depth and experience, just like we've dealt with for the OL position the past 2 seasons....

#Gamecock QB commit Connor Mitch had 388 yards passing and 5 TDs in a blowout win tonight. Did not play 4th quarter.

I watched the Goose Creek-Ashley Ridge game and Gerald Turner was doing his Eric Norwood thing all night. Caleb Kinlaw could start for some non-BCS schools right now and that's as a 16-17 year old junior.

I don't believe Tramel Terry had a catch, but he was double teamed all night and Goose Creek was breaking in a new quarterback. He did have a rushing touchdown. I still believe that Spurrier will flip this guy.

Tramel Terry isn't AJ Green 2.0. We have essentially 3 of his teammates recruiting him for us and his head coach is a former assistant with us. We'll flip him.

Terry won't flip. That's pretty much the end of it.
