Commander Data posted this on the regular rant

How anybody has convinced themselves that Hurts is a quarterback blows my mind. I am a Bama homer too but Hurts sucks”
Make no mistake he has an issue with Hurts.

That's not what I'm saying. Just repeating what I hear everywhere else that isn't this rant, and something I agree with. Jalen hasn't proven himself as a passing threat yet and we are at the midpoint of his second season. I want him to start. Tua is going to have growing pains that we can't handle at this point in our schedule. I agree with the poster above that the weaknesses of the team are: passing game(including WR and blocking), rushing the Qb with 4(and not losing containment), and the kicking game which is a meme at this point. Let me repeat for the illiterate bunch: Jalen gives our best chance for a title.
This board can't handle being even slightly critical to Jalen. Any other player or position group we can call awful no problem, but you say Jalen isn't anything to write home about as a passer and people lose their minds. He is a great runner, has great poise, doesn't turn the ball over. Those are huge. Just really average on a not so average team as a passer.

Yep, agree. It is what it is.

No, it isn't being critical. There are a handful of posters who are irrational. One thankfully us been relegated to tRant at least for a while. Criticism is fine, we all do it. I've said my share of Fvvck, Jalen! too. They go far beyond that in saying things that are simply untrue and/or haven't happened yet. Most annoying, they are outright saying the best QB isn't playing, which directly implicates the best staff in America in a scheme that places the program's success at risk - and anyone who watches Saban knows that is a damned lie. Nobody hates to lose worse than him.

This isn't a Hurts flame post but I think clearly the emotion of playing in front of so many of his home folks got to him.
That may have been his worst game at Bama. On the intentional grounding call, how the hell could he not see Bo who was WFO 10 yds from where the ball hit the ground?
Also, you can give a guy a pass for not looking like a superstar every game but WAAAAAAYYY too many times last night he'd throw into double or triple coverage.
Receivers also had a chronic case of the dropsies last night.
One thing I'd also like to see is for Saban to recognize and go with the hot hand at RB. It was clear the entire game that Harris was feeling it. He was hitting the hole way harder than Bo.

As long as I've been clear I'm not one of the "put Tua in crowd." Any freshman QB is going to make mistakes and I don't want that going into the LSU and Auburns of our schedule.

I think the majority of the people here are in the same camp : Jalen is the QB, he has improved in some areas but he is still not where he needs to be as a passer. He has other skills that are very good, but we fear what might happen when we have another situation where we have to throw. However, benching that guy for a true freshman is a terrible idea and will never happen in 100 years.
In other words, it is what it is, and this is the best situation we have with our current roster 6 weeks into the season.

I think Harris has been the big yardage guy all season, but I think Bo has value. Gives Damien a break and bruises up the defense. He reminds me a little of Trent in the NFL though where he just runs in a straight line, but he is a bruiser. I think going forward always having two backs split carries is ideal.

Yeah, Hurts struggled because of emotion. Wow.

It's 2017. Being a good quarterback isn't just about putting up passing yards. I know that your simpleton brain can't comprehend that idea, but maybe if you try hard enough it will seep through the jello.
How about my brain? People downvote, but not one person refuted a single point I made about the deficiencies in our downfield passing game...only part of which is on the QB. I'm not at all saying Hurts shouldn't be the starter, because he should be. But no one has yet to deny anything I mentioned.

My two cents...
Jalen reminds me a ton of J.T Barrett. For better or worse.
Jalen is going to hit all the records and score a lot of TDs. I do think he is progressing but has struggled in the past with passing efficiency that leads to an unbalanced Alabama Offense. An unbalanced offense means that we lose the TOP battle unless we are unbalanced and able to run rather than throw. The truth behind Jalen is somewhere in the middle between the recent shite show debates on this board.
Folks can defend Hurts but he has to continue to progress. As mentioned above, he has to ensure our offense is balanced. That is the job of the QB. If he doesn't do that, then he should receive criticism. Folks who criticize doesn't mean they hate the kid. In fact, I've seen the same folks who defend Hurts and give harsh criticism over other players while saying that folks hate Jalen. It's fairly laughable.
As far as folks using QBR, Jalen is 4th in the country but is 26 points lower in Passing EPA than the other top 3 QBs. In fact, his passing EPA is lower than the top 17 QBs and one point higher than Danny fricking Etling.
Additionally, what if's are what ifs. Jalen could have multiple INTs on the season. On the other side, he could have many many more yards and multiple TDs. WRs haven't helped him out but you can't blame a WR for a "drop" when there is pass interference. lol what a joke. Share the blame. If folks want to blame Foster's fumble for the TAMU TD then blame Jalen for JK's shitty arse punts.
Tua isn't going to start this year, let's be real. He does have a great arm. He has shown great talent and able to move in the box while hitting WRs in stride. However, we saw these things against teams like Vandy. Who knows how he performs against top tier talent or how consistent he will be. This once again falls in the "what if" categories. I will agree that we are set up for the future though.

I agree with all of that, the positive and the negative as well as the Tua starting note.

Of course not - it's ridiculous. Further, our offense is structured around a mobile QB and what that brings to the table. It's perfectly fair to critique the passing game which, let's be honest, is lacking. We haven't seen stellar improvement but it's not terrible either.....but let's face it, Jalen is never going to throw like Aaron fricking Rogers....but talk of benching him for Tua is ludicrous and would be season suicide. That said, the Jalen fan boys need to be able to concede the passing game is not what it's capable of given the skill players we have. It functions and that is about it.

I don't believe this at all. If anything, he's the opposite. He's as cool as anyone could be. His play last night was pretty similar to what it's been against better opponents over the last 11 months.

Don't disagree with any of this. As I've said in other threads, if/when the staff believes that there is a better passing option that adds more value than what we do now it is a 100% certainty they will go with that option. Since they haven't, I simply can't understand why a handful of posters fail to recognize the obvious.

The only thing that worries me about the JT Barrett reference is that he really hasn't progressed a ton throwing. You can argue his freshman year was his best year.
Although, Mobile QBs set a ton of records and can be hard to defend. It's equally tougher to win games when you can't hit the passes.
I have seen some very average to good passing QBs win a championship. Chris Leak, Matt Flynn, Greg Mc, Matt Mauk, Jay Barker, Scott Frost & Cardale Jones
On the reverse, I've seen a lot more elite running QBs fail.
