Sorry to disappoint you, but LSU is 11th all-time in victories, and 8th in bowl appearances, AHEAD of Penn State, and waaaaaaaaay ahead of Florida State and Miami.
As a matter of fact, LSU was way ahead of Florida State and Miami - BEFORE those two programs starting winning regularly.
As I said, you can swap around teams for both of those tiers.

USC is only 9th in victories and winning percentage.
Alabama is 7th in victories and 6th in winning %
Again, you can't use just one stat to make you point. Victories are a really hard marker to use considering the level of competition that the different teams have had to historically play against. But regardless, Bama would be 4th in victories if it didn't have to vacate wins because of a signed napkin and some kids trying to sell text books.
Bama has the most national championships no matter if you only go by AP, AP + BCS + UPI, or claimed NCs. Bama has the most bowl appearances and victories.
I bet if you were to ask 100 "college football experts" who the best football programs were historically, more than 90 of them would have Bama in their top 2 or 3.

It depends on what you mean by GOAT.... there isn't one correct answer but a variety of them

everyone knows it's between bama and the dame ... the others don't have the history that goes back to the 30s/20s, or don't have nearly the same number of titles and conference titles ...
Yep, so let's go by head to head match ups. What do those numbers look like?
I know one is the NC game NDh won but because UPI didn't do a poll after Bowl games, Bama claimed the NC.
The disparity in Bowl Game appearances is only because ND never accepted Bowl Bids until after the 1969 season, so that argument is invalid. ND would have AT LEAST as many Bowl appearances.
completely legit to put the dame over bama ...

Probably Michigan actually with their overall wins

I wouldn't call someone crazy who says that ND should be ahead of Bama (although personally I'd disagree). But ND and Bama are the only two in the discussion. Even if you take out the disputed NCs that Bama claims, and only claimed AP & BCS NCs, Bama still has more than ND.

I can understand Notre Dame and even Michigan being above Alabama, but Texas and Oklahoma most certainly, not. Penn State belongs above Georgia too... Penn State-LSU is arguable
ETA: Had Sandusky never been a person, there's no question Penn State is top 5

Sorry, I don't get Michigan. Just because they racked up wins over OSU and the little sisters of the north doesn't put them in the top 3. OU & USC have more of a claim than Michigan imo.

tab,
Surprisingly, I don't disagree with a whole hell of a lot of this. Yes, you should include a variety of criteria instead of just # of victories.
But I suspect that your 90 of 100 experts picking Bama in the top 2 or 3 would be a leeeeetle jaded because of the last 5 years of ultra-success Bama has had, RATHER than the 'all-time' historical numbers that really don't show them really as that high.
Don't get me wrong, I think their SEC titles and NC's DOES push them up higher than their 7th place in wins and 6th place in win% shows, I just don't think they should be considered #1 "all-time."

In terms of overall, consistent success and doing things the right way, Michigan is probably the best.
ETA: However, in my rankings, championships mean more than consistent success, but consistent success is very important imo

You all are kidding yourselves if you dont believe bama is the goat college football program. The 2013 NC against Notre Dame settled it. 42-14.
Hell... even Auburn's program has benefited from Bama's success....

Which is only one part of the equation. And anyways, if you were add back in the 8 wins Alabama was forced to forfeit in 1993, and the 21 wins Alabama vacated over a 3-season stretch in the mid-00s, the Crimson Tide would be 861-313-43 since they started playing football in 1892 (my earlier figures were inaccurate). That would put Alabama at #4 all-time in overall wins.
You can not do that.. there is a reason Alabama had to vacate or forfeit games, it is called NCAA Sanctions, it is part of your tradition.

It's very hard to rustle my jimmies with shite like this. After their last run I think they've risen to the top for now. Props to em. They've been very fortunate to have had two of the best coaches to ever roam a college sideline.
