I realize people can have different opinions, but you shredded your credibility when you put Texas, ahead of Bama. That is absurd.

He based it on wins, which you can't do alone with any kind of credibility. You had teams like Michigan playing 10-11 game schedules in the early-1900s, while teams like Alabama were still scheduling 4 or 5 teams per season. Take 1901 for example. The 1901 Michigan Wolverines went 11-0 and won the first ever Rose Bowl. Alabama finished 2-1-2 in that same year. It wouldn't be until the 1920s that Alabama would start having seasons that were as long as Michigan's had been from the 1890s onward.

The thread is hilarious. The answer to the OP is yes and there is no valid argument to be had disputing it.

Looking forward to the inevitable decline of Bama football. I know we like to talk about melts, but I think these “Tide” fans will be on the Auburn bandwagon in 5 years. It will be glorious

What's glorious is that UGA can't keep any of their recruits in state. UGA is possibly the most underachieving program in college football. Quit barking at opposing fanbases and Think about that for a minute.... All of that in state talent... Gone.

Has what, one major poll title since WW2? They aren't in the discussion.

The top 3 are Bama, ND, and USC.

As an ND guy, this is the way I look at it.

There is the Big Three, each having been the most significant program of its geographic region over the last 120 years or so. There are legitimate arguments for all three as the greatest program in college football history, and I think it's pretty close.

The only other two real contenders in my mind would be Oklahoma and Michigan. Oklahoma is probably pretty close, but just doesn't have quite the stats that Alabama, ND, and SC have. Michigan has won exactly 1/2 a national title since the 1940's. They're out. I'd put them around Nebraska or Texas historically.

The bowl record is astonishingly in favor of Alabama.

It was our (ND's) policy to not play bowl games for academic reasons for about 45 years. In retrospect it seems silly (and was), but we had a lot of elite teams during that stretch, including a couple that were among the greatest to ever play the college version of the sport.

And plus teams like Michigan have padded their win totals by playing in a conference that only had one other decent team in it. The Big 10 has always been Michigan, OSU, and little sisters of the north. Hasn't the Pac 8/10/12 basically owned the Big 10 in the Rose Bowl historically?

That was largely true from the 1970's to the 1990's, but historically (and I hate to say this), the Big Ten was the top dog in the country for quite a long time, especially so during the 1950's and 1960's. Minnesota had a great run with quite a few titles/ Michigan State was a national power in the 1950's and 1960's/Purdue was quite good in the 1950's and 1960's/Iowa was a serious national player, etc, etc. Now, Michigan did pile up a ton of victories way back (late 19th and early 20th centuries) when because they were simply one of the first programs to play that is still around on the big stage...it's kind of a give and take.

If Alabama was the goat, then you'd be the guy with its hind legs in your waders wouldn't you?

Fsu won 1 national title. So what? Number 1 recruiting classes, year in and year out puts us first in future. More national titles then anyone else puts us number 1 past. And 3/5 titles in last 5 years with us being another preseason number 2 or 3 this year and will be favored over everyone we play makes up the best present. Deal with it. We will be in the playoff, and LSU definitely will not be. I love bama haters, it's like lebron haters, hating greatness. Always gonna be haters and trolls. All we do is win. Lost 2 games to 2 good teams, and everyone thinks we have fallen off. Who besides fsu didn't lose 2 games?? So again, we weren't first but we were still damn near the top even in a down here. Yes, when you win 3/5, the 2 years you don't win it are down years.
Not trolling at all, just how it is. And everyone knows it!

When considering which college football team is the GOAT should we consider how many times the contenders have been on probation? I think so.

Alabama, USC and Oklahoma would all be in the discussion for the "dirtiest" college football teams of all time. How many times has each been on probation? Should each year on probation be deducted from MNC and conference titles?

I think Notre Dame may be the "cleanest" of all the GOAT contenders.
