Pampered my arse! My family on both sides are from West Helena, Arkansas. They all left except for a stubborn few.

None of them ever regret leaving even though it hurts them to say just how terrible it has become.

The corruption is unreal and they wanted the previous mayor gone which by the way was doing a good job. They did just that and a convicted felon won in a runoff election after spewing lie after lie.

They can't even get clean water for the residents but the town has the highest paid city council in the state.

Yes you heard right, higher than any city council in pampered arse Northwest Arkansas.

Theft is so bad that the local Walmart is struggling to stay open.

The town had three murders in one weekend. More murders in one weekend than Chicago.

Wow. That is some cherry picking. What single weekend was that?

While it's a tight race, I'm going to go with Oklahoma. Mississippi is also quite rough.

Well I see you are a Pig fan. As an OU fan I think the Arkie vs. Okie game is going to turn into a heated rivalry very quickly. It is unique in that both states look down on each other and think of the other as an insignificant, backwoods, hick state while thinking their own state matters in the bigger picture.

How many of those dollars go to breeders and takers, and how many go to keep farms afloat?

Important to differentiate.

The vast majority, like the vast majority of all federal dollars, go to industries and private sector contractors. WalMart is a HUGE recipient of federal money. I get it that breeding is a naughty idea where basing your business model on how much money you can take from taxpayers is part and parcel of the "conservative" ideology today but it has only been that way since about 1980...prior to that conservatives actually were concerned with conserving things...since the early 80's the only thing most conservatives are interested in is villifying working people and running a footrace to see how much tax money they can hand out to private sector businesses. The data is there for anyone to see all you gotta do is take a look. That is why Donald Trump connected with so many people...he did a lot of things while running and while in office but the single most important thing he did is flat out laid the lie to the conservative movement in the US over the last 40 years or so...what many now call RINOs.

For almost a century my family had a farm in Poplar Grove, Arkansas (just outside of Marvell and a bit down the road from Helena.). Hell, I can remember when it was just Helena, not Helena/West Helena.

And the sad truth is that area has been dying on the vine for decades. Abandoned homes covered in kudzu or with freaking trees growing out of them. Deserted streets. Shut down businesses that haven't been open for more than a decade.

So yes, when some of us say that area is in terrible shape we aren't making fun of "good, hardworking, folks trying to make a living by growing food and selling meth" we are just telling it like it is. And evidence suggests that folks from the area agree with us... since most of them don't live there anymore.

To live in its Mississippi.

To drive through, it’s Oklahoma by a fricking mile.

The amount of roadwork and bullshite tolls make me avoid that state as much as possible.

It is much better than Helena or else my parents wouldn't have made the move. Dad worked for Arkla gas company, put in a transfer for a place called Sheridan. A place they never heard of before and decided it was the place. No regrets in a small but safe, boring town.

Nothing wrong with Harrison and it is close to one of the best small rivers in the nation.
